Drinks & Nightlife

Smalls is as the name says, very cozy and intimate, although it does fan out over three levels, with an open rooftop plus several indoor spaces to choose from. The decor is decidedly Parisienne, and the mesmerizing signature cocktail list is enhanced by a large selection of absinthe drinks, with a traditional absinthe spigot sitting on top of the bar counter. It's a great little spot for escaping Bangkok, with its eclectic crowd and funky vibe, one feels more like Paris, Berlin, or New York here, and the bar has become the latest nightclub afficionados top hangout. The Bangkok Folk Museum, also known as the Bangkokian, sits behind a lovely garden, where a house dating from 1937 and comprised of three buildings, shows off what life was like in Bangkok prior to World War Ii. There are some really great period pieces here, such as a three-mirror vanity and a pleating machine, charcoal irons, and 75rpm records. The owner, Acharn Waraporn Surawadee, is the daughter of the original owners, and she lives in another small house right next to the rest of the displays. Bustling Yaoworat Road in the center of Chinatown becomes a culinary hotspot at night, with restaurants spilling off the footpaths onto the street itself. Most are open only at night and serve great food – most places specialize in seafood and the activity equals the quality of the food.Make sure to get off of Yaowarat and wander through some of the tiny side streets which are very atmospheric and home to some great hole in the wall eateries.

Shopping

Khao San Road has gone from being a hippie and backpacker haven to moving a bit more upscale. While it still remains a place for cheap lodgings and for Thais to come and check out the foreign crowd, it also is a decent spot to shop for certain items, and with plenty of food, bars, and people watching opportunities to boot, it makes for an enjoyable trip. Also known as Talad Dek Neaw ("hipsters" market), this market, formerly located in an old train depot, has moved across the city behind Seacon Square, and become the talk of the town. It takes place only on Wednesdays and weekends, and while the shopping starts at 4pm, it really doesn't liven up until the evening, when hundreds of vendors set up stalls selling antiques, collectables, and tons of retro items, currently a huge fad in Thailand. There are over 2000 stalls here, and the biggest collection of antiques to be found in Thailand. There are also lots of food stalls and impromptu tricked out VW bus bars, offering cheap cocktails and beer.
