We used to live in Kangaroo Valley and this was a favourite of ours. Lots of space indoors and a playground in the beer garden for the kids. Have the nachos. Top tip: Thursday is "locals night" which means free snacks!

If you have a spare couple of hours Moss Vale is worth a look. Near the old post office there are a handful of cafes and brunch spots and a few homewares shops.

"Robbo" to the locals. Robbo is surrounded by farmland and agriculture. There are charming antique stores and a strong emerging artist scene. Ben Quilty called Robertson home. And the new SHAC is home to some wonderful local artists and makers. You'll see it right next to the Big Potato.

Kangaroo Valley is a small village numbering fewer than a thousand people. The village has excellent food options, art and craft stores and just up the road, the "best pies in the world". They are excellent. The valley is beautiful with the river, swimming holes and a handful of walks.

Nowra is the main centre of Shoalhaven. It has the usual things you'd expect in a larger town: cinema, supermarkets, shops, cafes, restaurants. There are also a handful of walks and the Shoalhaven Zoo.

Shoalhaven Heads is more of a holiday town located at the mouth of the Shoalhaven River and the southern end of Seven Mile Beach. There is much to do in the town itself, but the beaches, wineries and the nature reserve make for a nice day outdoors.

Located in Jervis Bay, Huskisson ('Husky' if you're local) is known for its white sands and bright blue sea. So it goes without saying that the swimming is good. Add the cinema and Pilgrims — you have a decent day out.

Gerringong is a town undergoing change. Since the highway bypassed the town there has been renewed interest in setting up new eateries and bars. It's beginning to happen. Werri Beach is a great place for a morning walk and you can continue up to Kiama along the coast if you have the legs for it.

Berrima is somewhere you could easily spend a weekend and enjoy the town and Southern Highlands. Lots of great food, vineyards, a pub built by convicts and shops with lots of handmade wares. 'Charming' describes it well.
