Sightseeing

Santorini is a small Island located at the south Aegean Sea, nowadays the island is what remains after an enormous volcanic eruption that destroyed the earliest settlements on a formerly single island, and created the current geological caldera.Apart from the breathtaking views and the amazing sunsets Santorini is well known for the local wines. Also hosts the incredible “Excavations” of Akrotiri, the ruins of Ancient Thera and the museums of Ancient and Prehistorical Thera.
The Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri was one of the most important Minoan urban centres and ports in the Aegean sea when it was covered by volcanic ash in the 17th century BC. Today the site is covered by a bioclimatic roof and walkways are suspended above the archeological remains, which allows visitors to walk among the two and three-storey buildings.

Andreas Makaris was born in Athens in 1951. His father’s birthplace is Naxos where the whole family worked as potters and where Andreas had his first lessons at the potter’s wheel of his grandfather Christos. He graduated from the School of Ceramics in Athens and went on to teach pottery techniques in the same School for the next 6 years. Andreas Makaris’ work has won 5 awards at the Greek National Pottery Exhibition, that takes place in Athens every year. The artist lives and works in Santorini since 1985. Numerous times he came to the island and was pulled by its wild and strange beauty to set up home. Away from the streetful city of Athens, he is able to work more freely, inspired by the profuse light and the hidden mysteries of Santorini’s ancient past. He started experimenting with the replication of prehistoric Cycladic pottery and he has refined the technique to produce exact, full-scale reproductions of ancient theraic vessels. At the same time his work often combines contemporary ideas with traditional techniques.

Emporio is a wonderful settlement of Santorini, located in a distance of 10 kilometers from the capital Fira. Its name reveals its former significance for the island since it used to be the commercial center of Santorini for a long time. Emporio or else Nimporio may not be the capital, but it is still the largest village in the south. Right in the midst of the settlement, Kastelli is a landmark not to be missed. Kastelli means castle and is of Latin origin. In the village, travelers will find structures that resemble castles and constitute the most powerful protection of the islanders against the enemy. In avoidance of threats and dangers from the outside world, the people inhabiting Emporio were driven towards creating such structures. They included all the houses of the settlement and featured high walls to keep them out of sight. Through the castles, it was nearly impossible for anyone to enter without the islanders knowing it.

Santorini Skaros Rock: Skaros is a rocky headland that protrudes out to the azure blue Aegean Sea. It is located in front of the village of Imerovigli. In the earlier days, a majestic castle was located here and used to be the principal place of the Christian congregation in Santorini, till the beginning of the 1800s. Unfortunately, the castle was completely ruined during an earthquake in the 19th century and all that remains today are remnants of the castle. Legend has it that the medieval castle of Skaros was never conquered during its long 600 years of existence.

Episkopi Gonias, also Mesa Gonia is built on the foothills of Profitis Ilias mountain. It was almost entirely destroyed by an earthquake in 1956. As a result, most of its dwellers moved near the coast and built the village of Kamari. The village derives its name from Panagia Episkopi, a nearby 11th-century Byzantine church that used to be the seat of the Orthodox diocese of Santorini.
