Parks & Nature

This is our favorite place to go for a jog. The park is exceptionally manicured and gives some of the best views of the city. Bring your camera or selfie stick in hand because the pictures taken here will be definitely post-worthy!

Discovery Green is in located in the heart of downtown. You can walk to it from our house as long as you are prepared to take a 20 minute walking tour of downtown which we love to do! There is always something going on at Discovery Green such as the recent free concerts during Final Four, to movie nights on the lawn, to festivals of all sorts.

Eleanor Tinsley Park is less than a five minute walk from our place. The landscaping here is breathtaking with picture perfect views of the downtown skyline. We love jogging here, taking walks, renting bikes, renting canoes to take down the Bayou, and picnicking here. The trails go several miles down Allen Parkway; you can stop for breakfast at the Dunlavy or at night, watch the bats take flight along the Waugh bridge.

Food Scene

Come in the early morning for a quiet cup of coffee and a melt in your mouth crepe. Get relaxed at a table outdoors with a book or just your thoughts as you watch midtown wake up. Don't worry, its open until 10pm, so you can enjoy the view and their mouth watering crepes pretty much any time of day. They sell champagne and orange juice so you can turn breakfast to brunch anytime.

This place is so yummy! If you are craving some pancakes, biscuits with gravy, migas, or any other mouth watering breakfast meal and you want every bite to make each taste bud happy, then you MUST eat here! My favorite is the French Omelette. Harry's has a great cup of coffee and/or a great carafe of mimosas. If you want to eat healthy but hearty you can ask for egg whites on any of their omelettes.

This a small but popular locale for authentic Mexican food and pastries. I am in love of their migas breakfast plate and visit quite often just for them. Their cinnamon coffee is a bit hit around these parts that they sell packages of it for you to take home. The rest of their menu is a delight such as their tortas and tacos plates. Sooo good!

Their Sunday Brunch buffet is our favorite! From the fresh fruit bar, to the omelette station, to the fresh and hot breakfast items, and picture perfect scenery, to the $5 mimosas, this brunch is worth the $25 per person. We are also fans of their regular lunch and dinner menu. Healthy and tasty selections; great sandwiches; overall solid menu. Great patio seating! Do not forget to take a few pics by their pond before you leave!

This is the original location for Barnaby's restaurants. Very cozy seating inside. While small, it is big in taste! Fresh squeezed orange juice, green eggs and ham is a popular option. The service is great; the waitstaff will make you feel at home.

We recommend that you check this place out, not just for a unique cocktail but for their tapas menu! Come with a group or with your SO and select a variety of tapas dishes so that you can sample their unique Japanese fusion flavors. We were not only surprised but delighted by the mix of flavors. If you do not have time for a sit down breakfast, pick up a pastry and coffee from here. All pastries are freshly baked and will ignite every taste bud when you bite into any one of their delicious concoctions! This place is seriously dangerously tasty. I can never say no to one of their snickerdoodles.

If you are new to Houston or to Texas, you MUST try some BBQ before you leave. Jackson's Street Barbeque is highly rated around here and is conveniently next to Minute Maid Park. How much more Texan can you get?

Drinks & Nightlife

This little bar looks like a house but don't pass it up. Stop by, have a beer, and sit on the patio. Since it is so close to our house, it becomes the place we have our first beer of the night or our last. The bartenders are friendly and have the skills to mix you a good drink or recommend a local beer.

Arts & Culture

The museum district is home to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts (HMFA), Contemporary Arts Museum, Children's Museum, The Holocaust Museum, and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The museums are in walking distance of each other with the Houston Zoo at Hermann Park right there as well! From our house, ditch the car and parking prices, and walk to the rail line for a quick zip to the Museum District.

Shopping

Rice Village is named after the prestigious Rice University that resides in the neighborhood just a block away. Here you will find it all from restaurants, to shopping, to late night pubs. We love the selection here; I can shop at Express or Gap, go to Half Price Books, explore boutique shops, eat at Torchy's Tacos, and grab a cold beer at The Ginger Man with friends. The combination of shopping, eating, and pub crawls with friends is endless!
