The stately Moses Myers House and its peerless collection create an exceptionally accurate picture of the late Federal period and the life of this prosperous Jewish family. Moses Myers, an early American entrepreneur and leading citizen, built the house to accommodate his growing family and social prominence. The home passed down through several generations of the family to Norfolk mayor Barton Myers, who carried out early architectural restoration in 1892. The Moses Myers House was one of the first brick homes built in Norfolk after the Revolutionary War, during which saw most of the town leveled by British bombardment and subsequent fire. The home contains a remarkable number of furnishings original to the family, including Gilbert Stuart’s companion portraits of Moses Myers and his wife, Eliza, as well as works by Thomas Sully. Admission to the museum is free.

Located on the waterfront in Freemason Harbor - The Marine Observation Tower also known as the Taiwanese Pagoda is the centerpiece for the tranquil garden. The tower was a 1989 gift to the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Norfolk honoring Taiwan’s trading ties with Virginia. The two-story pagoda, with Chinese architectural details and ornamentation, sits on the concrete foundation of an old molasses tank. The Pagoda is the centerpiece of the Oriental Garden. This unique building provides a panoramic view of the beautiful Oriental Garden, the USS Wisconsin, sunsets over the Elizabeth River, and is a beautiful venue for weddings, receptions, and other events.

The Wells Theatre opened on August 26, 1913. That first year, Maude Adams flew across the stage as Peter Pan and Well’s presented Ben-Hur complete with teams of horses on treadmills. Fred and Adele Astaire, Will Rogers, Billie Burke, John Drew, John Phillip Sousa and Dorothy Gish all appeared on the Wells stage. In 1916, they installed a movie screen and by the beginning of World War II, burlesque had joined the repertory. In the 1960s, the Wells became an x-rated movie house, its backstage area converted into The Jamaican Room, a notorious gin mill and brothel. The Virginia Stage Company moved into the Wells Theatre following restoration on February 7, 1980. $3.5 million in additional restorations were completed in 1986, resulting in the Beaux-Arts gem’s designation as a National Historic Landmark
