Restaurants & Bars

Offering sophisticated dining to kiosk takeaway, this award-winning restaurant and kiosk - almost on our doorstep - is a ‘must-visit’ on any trip to Byron. The restaurant has a spectacular panoramic view that takes in Clarkes Beach and The Pass and stretches to Julian Rocks in the distance. It is the only restaurant in Byron right on the beach. The restaurant has a smart-casual vibe and a great menu. It’s also a great place to head for coffee or a glass of wine and maybe a shared plate - and a chat! The public beach-access path can be found to the left of the restaurant, when facing the sea. *Prefer takeaway? Sit at the outdoor tables under the trees. ‘Beach’ Kiosk serves takeaway coffee, tea, smoothies and snacks from early morning until late-ish, making this a great option for swimmer-clad eating on the way home from the beach. Or, do as the locals do: step inside and walk along the restaurant’s interior boardwalk to check the surf (and the view). Byron Council specially designated that this interior boardwalk, which is on the ‘town side’ (far left) INSIDE the restaurant, should remain free from tables and chairs so people can walk to the front of the restaurant to check the surf. Note: No wifi available in restaurant.

Chic, contemporary bar and restaurant for shared-plate dining, snacks, drinks or coffee. Order drinks and a deli platter to share - or a more substantial meal - and you won’t be disappointed. Smart casual, suits all age groups, and a great beachy vibe. Reasonably priced - for Byron - and an upbeat atmosphere, but not so loud you can’t hear yourself talk - except for early evening (6 pm Saturday’s). If it’s not too busy you might be lucky enough to snare a table with a beach view from the balcony - always worth asking. https://loftbyronbay.com.au/

Spot a local celebrity at this laid-back favourite food and music venue at Belongil Beach. Shared plates, pizza, and an array of mouth-watering snacks and meals - and live entertainment. Put The Treehouse on your must-visit list for a casual lunch, afternoon drinks or a catchup, anytime, with partner, friends or family. The Treehouse is a local fave that’s stood the test of time. Looking for a special night out or lazy holiday lunch? Rae’s at Wategos is well worth a visit. (If going for dinner, make sure to arrive before nightfall so you can see the spectacular ocean view.) Smart casual. Lunch, dinner, licensed (obviously). Good menu (For seafood aficionados, I can highly recommend the Balmain/Moreton Bay bugs, when available.) * Rae’s Cellar Bar - an outdoor Barefoot Bar that serves drinks and snacks is open from 12 pm. Walk in straight off the beach. BUT remember to book for lunch or dinner at the restaurant because Rae’s is a popular wedding reception venue and the restaurant is sometimes unavailable. *Also, Rae’s coffee cart is a local favourite - and a great place to get your morning coffee fix when visiting Wategos. Pick up your coffee and find a seat overlooking the beach. Try it soon!

Miss Margarita’s (think fish tacos, nachos and all things Mexican) is an ever-popular dining choice for lunch or dinner. On any day, diners spill out onto the footpath, others queue to get in, and it is often booked out, which is always a good sign that the food is good. So if you like Mexican-style food, Miss Margarita’s is the place to go.

Special night out? Look no further than St Elmo’s - amazing food, and a sophisticated and intimate atmosphere. The only drawback is snaring a table as, even on a quiet night, St Elmo’s is often booked out, so remember to book early. Whether you start at the bar or head straight to your table for some of the Bay’s best tapas, you‘re assured of a fantastic evening at this superb venue. The Pass Cafe provides great indoor-outdoor dining. Dine on the covered deck or choose an outdoor table under a market umbrella. The Pass Cafe is footsteps from the beach - at the best surfing break in Australia - and it offers a wide range of meals, snacks and drinks. This licensed cafe not only has tasty menu options, grab-and-go snacks (think fish and chips), ice creams and drinks but the friendly staff will welcome you warmly - even if you’re barefoot, in your swimmers and a towel over your shoulder. ‘Rustic Italian fare with flair’ sums up this wine bar and restaurant - perfectly. After dining at Di Vino a few nights before writing this, I thought the above quote was very apt. The atmosphere was cosy - upbeat without being too loud. The meal was well presented, and it didn’t take an eon to arrive - and it was VERY tasty. One meal and I was totally addicted! And the cost seemed reasonable. Di Vino has become one of my go-to Italian eateries - and I’m trying to find an excuse for another visit! https://www.agfg.com.au/restaurant/di-vino-byron-bay-72408

Vegetarian + Healthy eating

Although many cafes and restaurants in Byron Bay have vegetarian eating options - here are a few eateries that specialise in vegetarian meals BUT not all of these are solely vegetarian - and some vegetarian meals would also suit non-vego diners.
Looking for a healthy salad or meal? I’m told from a reliable local source that Leaf & Grain, next to Bayleaf in Marvell Street, is one of the best. Review from Trip Advisor: Amazing salad Takeaway-style cafe with quick and easy service of delicious meals. Amazing coffee. Great vegetarian options.

To sample the special flavours of country living, in a unique coastal setting, visit Mrs Birdy’s cafe at South Golden Beach. Choose scrumptious homemade cake and coffee, or a vegetarian burger or fresh salad - or from late afternoon sample amazing pizza, veggo or otherwise. It all looks - and tastes - so good you‘ll want to take some home for later. Special treat: ask for cakes cooked by Victoria - choose whatever is available on the day - perhaps apple and almond cake, chocolate olive oil cake (soooo moist), lemon meringue tart, orange polenta cake - to mention a few. Country cooking at its best - healthy snacks and mains and gluten and dairy-free dessert options.

Open from about 7 am the Kiosk at the Beach Cafe is an ideal place for a grab-and-go snack or coffee from early morning. Simply order your coffee, snack etc and relax on the tables provided on your way to or from Clarke’s Beach. Convenient, casual ‘beachy’ eating - in your swimmers! Can suggest the prawn roll, when available, as a great after-swim light lunch.

Gary (Gaz) Morgan is a longtime local, who can teach you EVERYTHING you need to know about surfing. Style surfing is one of the few surf schools licensed to teach surfing IN THE WAVES AT BYRON BAY - rather than having to travel by bus to an out-of-town destination. Style Surfing is Byron’s longest-running surf school and has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the best. Locals recommend Gaz because they know his reputation and they say ‘He’s a legend - the best ever’. Gaz guarantees to get you up and surfing or, for the more experienced surfers, help you fine tune your surfing skills. To book or make an enquiry, ring Gaz on +61416162969. See Gary’s website for more info: https://www.stylesurfingbyronbay.com/ Recommend by locals and our B&B guests. Surf lessons are held IN Byron Bay. WARNING: Some other surf schools will load you into a bus, drive you out of town - falsely claiming the waves are better there - and conduct the lesson in areas not suited to beginners BECAUSE their surf school doesn’t have a licence to operate in Byron Bay.
