Artistic markets

The markets in Sardinia are a place where you can spend a pleasant evening admiring the local crafts and street artists.
For over twenty years the evenings of San Teodoro, in summer, come alive with over a hundred colorful stalls of the evening market Coclearia. A market that distinguishes itself from the classic traditional market and represents a real event for the east coast of Sardinia. One of the many characteristics that diversify it is to welcome inside not only traders but also craftsmen and street artists.

Birdwatching and nature tour

The hinterland of Sardinia is wonderful, it offers scents, colors and breathtaking views!
Sardinia is a land to be explored especially with excursions, following nature trails and entering the hinterland to grasp the sense of an island that has no comparison in the rest of the world. Behind the village of San Teodoro stands an imposing mountain, Monte Nieddu, whose peak reaches 970 meters above sea level, a challenge for those who are passionate about hiking or mountain biking, because the view from above amply repays the effort needed to reach the summit. Nieddu, in Sardinian, means black and this name derives from the dark vegetation that covers the mountain, but the landscape that you meet going up to Mount Nieddu is very heterogeneous: forests of oaks, cork oaks, the characteristic fauna (including wild boar, ravens, peregrine falcon and golden eagle), the scent of oleander and juniper make up a scenario of pure beauty. The nature trails are also recommended for families with children who can easily reach Vedetta Palemonti, a vantage point from which to admire the Marine Area of Tavolara and continue in the direction of the natural waterfalls of Rio Petrisconi. The water, over the centuries, has dug the granite of the rock creating natural pools where you can swim, in other words Monte Nieddu gives you the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the wonders of the Gallura landscape.

The lagoon of San Teodoro, recently acquired by the municipality of San Teodoro and included in the list of special areas of conservation of sites of Community importance (S.I.C.), is a valuable ecosystem that houses a great biological heritage of flora and fauna, paradise for bird watching... Its environment is home to the sea bass, gilthead bream, the look, but also the pink flamingo, cormorant, heron, coot, kingfisher, kestrel, marsh harrier and many other species of marsh and marine fauna. The lagoon can be visited along some routes, starting from the north or south. Recently, wooden fences have been installed that delimit additional routes for the observation of endemic species, on the western stretch of the beach La Cinta from which you can access. The fence has a double function: it indicates the path and marks the forbidden areas involved in specific requalification projects through the planting of the characteristic essences of the site, thanks also to the scientific support of the Marine Protected Area of Tavolara-Punta Coda Cavallo. The site is immersed in the greenery of the Mediterranean scrub and the best way to visit it is to walk calmly, trying to capture the details of the natural heritage and birdlife present.

The Gorropu gorge (in Sardinian the term gorropu means "gorge" and the same prefix indicates it, as well as in English and French with the term "gorge") is a deep canyon located in Supramonte, Sardinia, and marks the border between the municipalities of Orgosolo and Urzulei. The gorge originated thanks to the intense erosive action caused by the waters of the Rio Flumineddu. The Gorropu Gorge, with its over 500 m of height and a width that varies from 4 meters in the narrowest points to reach a few dozen in others, is considered the deepest canyon in Italy and one of the deepest in Europe.

Ideal for those looking for days of sun and relaxation, without the crowds that characterise other beaches, Punta Saline beach is immersed in the Mediterranean maquis, with light-coloured sand and a beautiful turquoise sea lapping the shores. Despite the beauty of the place, it is almost always semi-deserted, also due to the lack of services on site, except for a refreshment point. Not suitable for families with small children, it is much loved by fishermen, surfers and those travelling with their four-legged friends. With its wild nature, sea lilies sprouting from the sand and numerous wading birds taking flight from the nearby pond, Punta Saline beach is a must for nature lovers.

Among the various excursion opportunities on our island, we can certainly include the Olbia trails. More recent and perhaps less well known than other areas, it nevertheless includes interesting and easy routes. Throughout the territory you can admire different small naturalistic realities and many of these paths are even accessible by public transport. On the Hello Olbia website you can find all the paths. We present here one of the many excursions among the most scenic and that allows you to reach the small fort of Capo Ceraso, a lookout station perfectly camouflaged among the granite rocks of the area built during the Second World War. The route is very easy and the total distance covered is about 1.30 km. To reach the blockhouse and the lookout post, the path climbs through the Mediterranean scrub and Gallura granite for a total of 100 m. Near the now abandoned structure, a beautiful granite staircase climbs up to the summit where the view is truly breathtaking. From the little beach of Poltu de sa paza, a path branches off to our right, indicated by a wooden sign. We leave some houses on our left and the shelters built by campers on our right. At this point the path begins to climb and in just under twenty minutes we are already at the top. The first structure we will visit is the small fortress leaning against the granite rocks and perfectly camouflaged with them. Next to the small structure is a cistern. From there, a granite staircase, built close to the rock face, climbs up to the small lookout. The view from here is truly marvellous and ranges from Capo Coda Cavallo to Capo Figari, the island of Molara and the beautiful island of Tavolara, to the north the Gulf of Olbia and the many small islands that follow the coast of Capo Ceraso.

The Parco Fluviale del Padrongianus (Padrongianus River Park) is a beautiful natural attraction in the immediate vicinity of Olbia, where you can spend a beautiful day enjoying walks and outdoor activities. Canoes, bicycles and educational and recreational activities are often organised in the park's facilities. It is also recommended for children due to the presence of outdoor games. The paths are indicated, there are several points for taking photos and spotting birds, signs with drawings-photos of the flora and fauna present on the site. It is possible to reach a Nuraghe inside the park area and hire canoes and bikes. Much attention is paid to nature and the recycling of materials. The Padrongianus River Park was hit on 18 November 2013 by a flood that caused extensive damage to the structures and forced the Province of Olbia Tempio to close the area to the public. Little by little, it is returning to full use.

Insula360 offers a series of experiences tailored to the needs of those who wish to visit the Island throughout the year. The transmission of our knowledge is at the base of the Escapes that we propose to our travellers who, taking the time to visit our land slowly, will bring back home indelible memories of a thousand-year-old land of dazzling colours. Every day from San Teodoro an expert helmsman, assisted by a dolphin scientist, will take you on a conscious tour of this paradise of life, colour and history. The journey inland is provided by Toreddu, a faithful minibus that will climb towards Nuragic Barbagia in a filigree route that will take you back thousands of years to the Island of Towers. The territory of Dorgali, a treasure trove of extraordinary monuments and the enchanted Supramonte will complete the work. In both cases the participants of our escapes will be few people, either - alas - for safety reasons, or to fully enjoy an experience far, far away from everyday life. All this will be alternated with moments of pure oblivion: a tuf or solo ride in the bluest sea of Gallura, a stop in the shadow of a Giants' Tomb, or even, refreshment in an archaic Pinnettu, tasting forgotten dishes with a unique flavour. A series of characters in search of an author will accompany you to the Island of Oblivion: a boy with high hopes, a dolphin girl, a native of the island of Molara, a former young archaeologist and a sprinting mother, a teacher of the sea, a biologist at leisure... contacts: +39 3516747759 - e-mail: insula360@hotmail.com

Trekking within everyone's reach in the Usinavà forest The Usinavà forest falls entirely within the territory of the municipality of Torpè and its acquisition by the Ente Foreste dello Stato dates back to the 1960s. The morphology of the territory and the landscapes are strongly characterised by the geological substratum represented by Paleozoic granites of pink, light grey or white colour, modelled by the atmospheric agents into bizarre and suggestive shapes. Along the watercourses there are riparian formations consisting mainly of willows and tamarisks. This itinerary is an easy walk for everyone and offers the possibility of observing a good part of our flora (the vegetation is represented by holm oak woods and above all by scrubland and garrigue) and a rich and varied fauna (in addition to the mouflon, which was reintroduced to the area some time ago, there are also the golden eagle, the buzzard, the Sardinian partridge, the wild cat, the marten, the weasel and the Sardinian hare). There are equipped areas for resting and toilets.

Beach

The most beautiful beaches in the area.
A jewel of the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, an uncontaminated paradise protected by the marine area of Tavolara, of which it is part, a beach of fine white sand, dotted with junipers and mimosas. The sand here is very clear and thin, the sea water is light blue, the seabed is shallow and sandy, ideal for those on holiday with children. It should be added that this beach is also accessible to disabled people, so it is a recommended stop for those who want to start falling in love with Sardinia.

Let's talk about the beautiful beach of Porto Taverna, famous for its beautiful view of the island of Tavolara. A breathtaking view that forms the backdrop to one of the most beautiful beaches on the east coast of Sardinia. The beach of Porto Taverna is located in the municipality of the popular tourist resort Porto San Paolo and is 10 minutes from San Teodoro and 15 minutes from Olbia. It is about 1 km long and is characterized by fine white sand, shallow and sloping seabed, clear and crystalline water. Because of its characteristics Porto Taverna is a beach suitable for everyone and especially for families with children who can play safely on the shore without worrying about the "high" water. But not only that. Thanks to its position on windy days it becomes an excellent destination for windsurfers and on days of calm flat instead a fantastic starting point for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts to discover the marine park of Tavolara and Molara. Directly on the beach you can find various services including a large parking lot, facilities for the disabled, camping, bars and restaurants.

The Doctor's beach is a very small beach that guarantees a splendid view of uncontaminated wild environments. The beach consists of a small strip of light gray sand, in which there are some rocks, behind it, there is instead the dense vegetation of the Mediterranean. The rest of the beach of Capo Ceraso is made up of round stones, in shades of brown and beige, which tends to dirty white in the pebbles lying on the shoreline. The sea is in shades of blue and green water, which mingle with each other and play with the reflections of the sun and the shallow seabed and rich in stones. The waters of the beach of Capo Ceraso give spectacular images to lovers of snorkeling and underwater photography, thanks to the marine flora and interesting ichthyofauna.

To enrich the context of the beautiful Cala Girgolu (or Ghjlgolu) there are also granite rocks shaped by the winds and waters of Sardinia. One of these has given a third name to the site, that of La Tartaruga, unfortunately disfigured by incivility. The locality is composed of several coves where the blue waters embrace the coast that, beyond the white, boasts pink shades, due to the erosion of the boulders, while the scent of the Mediterranean scrub wraps around every ravine. Opposite you can admire the island of Tavolara, which emerges from the imposing waters to touch the sky with its limestone peaks. Not far away is also the beach of L'Aldia Bianca, on the border with the municipality of Loiri Porto San Paolo.

The most famous beach of San Teodoro in one of the most beautiful natural contexts of the Mediterranean, reachable on foot from the northern outskirts of the town. La Cinta creates a five-kilometre-long arch of thin white sand dunes that gently slope down, without rocks, into a clear blue sea, scented with juniper, sea lily and helichrysum, which adorn a landscape that has remained untouched despite being very popular. Its seabed is shallow and clear: it is a beach loved by families with children, young people and nature lovers. La Cinta overlooks, towards the sea, the marine area of Punta Coda Cavallo - island of Tavolara, which stands with its imposing profile almost opposite the bay, and inland on the lagoon of San Teodoro. Thanks to its environmental variety, it is a shining corner of biodiversity where the relaxation of the sea and the taste for adventure are combined. It is the ideal place for long walks. You will admire aspects of great interest related to birdlife and birdwatching: coots, fraticelli, red herons and mallards live undisturbed in the lagoon. If you want to see the pink flamingos up close, you'll be amazed here: many people live in the brackish waters behind the dunes. The beach is equipped with all services: parking, tourist information point - to organize itineraries in the area - beach bar, rental of bathing equipment, canoes and skates, boat trips and fishing trips, water sports, sailing and kite surfing school. For this exciting speciality there is an area dedicated to fans of active holidays (the kite zone).

A place that is a symbol of Sardinia. Capo Coda Cavallo is a strip of granite land that extends into a stretch of sea sheltered by the imposing mass of Tavolara, the smooth rocks of Molara and the picturesque islet of Proratora, with which it makes up a protected area of 15 thousand hectares on crystal clear waters, coves and coves, from Capo Ceraso to Punta s'Isuledda, where lies the southernmost of the beautiful beaches of San Teodoro. You will see one of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the Mediterranean: white sand beaches, coves, islets, lagoons and endless shades of colors. In any wind, you'll find a location with a calm sea. And underwater, another world to discover. The marine area of Tavolara-Capo Coda Cavallo is ideal for diving: routes tested in walls, cracks and caves, environments rich in biodiversity and populated by swarms of confidant fish, which, amidst red starfish and yellow gorgonians, offer unforgettable shows, such as Tedja Liscia and in the shoal of the Pope, south-east of Tavolara, Punta Arresto, the island of Molara and in the depths of the rock of Molarotto. The peninsula is characterized by sandy coves and cliffs covered by Mediterranean scrub with intense scents: strawberry tree, juniper, mastic, myrtle and tamarisk. The beach of Coda Cavallo has a particular shape that gives its name to the promontory: the mirror of water in front is so sheltered as to seem a calm and clear lagoon.

4 km north of San Teodoro you will find the beach Puntaldia ( Puntaldia Beach ), one of the smallest beaches in the area with a length of 120 meters. This beach is a continuation of the beach of La Cinta, separated only by the entrance to the lagoon of La Foca. A spectacular beach, which perfectly sums up all the characteristics of the other 'pearls' of San Teodoro: silky white sand, waters with shades ranging from turquoise to emerald and crystal-clear seabed. Colours that contrast with the fragrant Mediterranean scrub, typical of Gallura, which surrounds the beach: yellow broom, green myrtle and juniper, vermilion strawberry tree fruit. Isuledda, which is half a kilometre long, is located a few kilometres south of the town of Theodore, on the promontory of the same name, which represents the southern limit of the Tavolara marine protected area. From the bay you can admire the imposing outline of the island to the north-east and your gaze will reach Puntaldìa and Capo Coda Cavallo, where two other splendid beaches stand out. Behind the sandy expanse is a small lagoon fed by the Lu Chissaggiu stream, home to rare species of birds. The beach is surrounded by an immense expanse of olive groves and orchards.

Marina Maria beach is one of those beaches on the Olbia coast beloved by locals but little known by tourists. The water turns out to be clean and a beautiful turquoise color and deserves a few hours of relaxation. Nearby are small isolated coves ideal for those who do not like crowds. The beach has bars and is very popular with windsurfers, even in low season, as is the nearby Vecchie Saline beach. It turns out to be a great idea in mid-season for those who want to discover the Olbia area and experience the sea in a different way.

You will be impressed at first glance, dazzled by the whiteness of the sand and the intense turquoise of the sea. You will feel as if you are in Polynesia or the Caribbean, and it is no coincidence that it is called 'little Tahiti'. Cala Brandinchi is a beach of exotic beauty, listed among the 15 most beautiful in Sardinia by specialised websites, confirmation that paradise also exists on Earth. San Teodoro's most resplendent pearl stretches between Punta Sabbatino and Capo Coda Cavallo, a strip of granite land stretching out into the sea, almost facing the imposing mass of Tavolara, a limestone mountain that emerges from the water and provides a scenic backdrop to an inimitable landscape. The long, narrow strip of fine, white sand plunges into the crystal-clear water. The seabed is very shallow for tens of metres with a 'pool effect', ideal for swimming and children's games. The white of the sand brings out the shades of the water: from emerald green to turquoise, from azure to cobalt blue. Dark reflections appear where the rocks outcrop, the habitat of a rich marine fauna and an oasis for snorkelling enthusiasts. Surrounding them are sand dunes covered with junipers, rushes, sea lilies and aromatic plants. Behind them is the greenery of perfectly manicured gardens and a pine forest, where you can find shade, refreshment and ample parking, also suitable for campers.

Ristorante L'Ea Cana in San Teodoro is a family-run restaurant, created many years ago by Pietrina and Savino. In fact, it was they who, following their memories, began to make and offer their preparations: a wide range of dishes that are the fruit of the old recipes of their family's Sardinian cuisine. Simple dishes, linked to the territory and popular traditions of Gallura and the inland areas. Today the restaurant is managed and cared for by their son Vito and his wife Immacolata with the utmost professionalism: they, too, proudly continue along the path traced by their parents and offer guests the old recipes of their mother and grandmother, revised and, when possible, improved, accentuating those flavours and scents so characteristic and unique to the countless plants of the surrounding area. All dishes are always elaborately prepared and served with loving grace: even the composition of the food gives back figures and colours that certainly invite you to eat with gusto. Among the exquisite specialities on the restaurant's extensive menu of meat and fish dishes are: prawns with figs and bottarga (roe), very delicate fish dishes with particularly strong flavours, typical desserts such as parfaits and desserts made with one of Sardinia's best-known plants, the myrtle. A popular first course is Sardinian ravioli, ravioli filled with ricotta cheese, served with a typical wild boar or pork sauce: it will be hard to give it up! For lovers of the sea, the menu offers mussel soup: the Gulf of Olbia is renowned and appreciated for its mussels, small in size but full of excellent flavour. For lovers of simplicity, the restaurant also offers delicious pizzas, baked in a wood-fired oven: an alternative for all tastes. In the wood-fired oven of the meat and fish restaurant in San Teodoro, the pizzaiolo prepares numerous pizzas, from classic to fancy ones, to those customised according to the guests' tastes.

Tenute Olbios is one of the youngest and most promising wineries in Gallura, driven by the great ambition to combine the Sardinian tradition, with its vines and a certain sobriety, with the demands of modern oenology, where elegance is the master, both in the style of the wines and in the way they are presented. A winery tinged with pink: Daniela Pinna, an esteemed agronomist and oenologist, is at the helm. Beyond the bushes of Mediterranean scrub, which together with the granite rocks form the arboreal backdrop to the landscape of Gallura, from the white beaches of Loiri Porto San Paolo you can admire one of the most exciting views in all of Sardinia: high above the sea rises a trapezoid rock, almost an enormous white gianduiotto speckled with grains of hazelnuts and pistachios, which is called the Island of Tavolara and on which legends focus on its mythical kingdom. This is the landscape that forms the backdrop to Tenute Olbios, sixty hectares of vineyards in Venafiorita, between the municipalities of Olbia and Loiri Porto San Paolo. The land is made up of crumbling granite sand, which gives an extraordinary minerality, freshness and finesse to the vermentino wines, but also to the red grapes, such as cannonau, bovale, cabernet sauvignon and merlot, and is refreshed by the iodine-rich breezes that blow in from the sea, contributing to the quality of the wines. The winery was established three generations ago, when Daniela's grandfather, in love with this area, decided to develop the family property by cultivating the land and creating one of the first modernly organised "stazzi", breaking with the tradition of small vegetable gardens with houses scattered throughout the Gallura region. The vineyards, mostly of Vermentino grapes, located around the production premises, are managed directly by Daniela, an expert agronomist, who has chosen criteria identical to those chosen by the most important organic companies: chemical treatments reduced to a minimum, mainly involving the use of sulphur and copper on the plants, strictly manual harvesting of the grapes, processing of the only grapes produced by the company and traditional wine-making processes conducted exclusively in the cellar. The winery's flagship wine is Lupus in Fabula, made from vermentino grapes, matured on the skins of yeasts and made in steel; this is flanked by a mature and structured vermentino such as In Vino Veritas, the rosé Cavé, the red Nessuno and finally Bisso, a classic method made from vermentino grapes produced only in the best years.

Azienda Agricola Lu Beddu - Cantina Borrelli is located in the North East of Sardinia, in the region of Gallura, in Arzachena, on the Costa Smeralda. The story of Lu Beddu begins back in 1974, when Marisa, originally from Luino, was on holiday in the north of Sardinia, after visiting various places, both of what the locals call "the garden of Arzachena". Fiorenzo, who once arrived in Lu Beddu, was fascinated by the place. He has clear ideas, as always, and the confirmation comes from the results of analyses he has carried out on the land, which show characteristics suitable for planting a vineyard and producing grapes. In 1975, the first vineyard was planted exclusively with Vermentino; the grapes produced were delivered to a social winery in Gallura. In 2007, Fiorenzo decided to differentiate the production by adding Cannonau, despite the contrasting opinion of the technicians. Thanks to the minerality of the granitic and partly clayey soils, Vermentino di Gallura finds its natural habitat. It is the only Vermentino in Italy and the only wine in Sardinia to boast the DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita - Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin), which in recent years has enjoyed great success all over the world.

The chromatic impact of Sardinia is strong and perhaps many do not know that Sardinia is the home of muralism in Italy, in fact some of the most beautiful murals in the world can be found in some of its villages. An artistic form that originated as a free expression of protest movements, and it is no coincidence that the Cantina Murales was given this name. This inspiration can be found not only in their wine, but also in their labels such as the white Lumenera Vermentino di Gallura DOCG , which depicts a scene set at dusk, or in the red Millant'anni which depicts an old man sitting with a stick, or again in the red Ai Posteri Isola Dei Nuraghi. IGT , where two hands are engraved on the black background as a metaphor for the gift. The Cantina is based in Olbia in Loc. Piliezzu Gallura, and is run by the Canopoli family. Founded in 2007, it has a very wide production of wines that have a well-defined character that is expressed both in the substance and in the colours, golden, brilliant or soft of the whites and intense, deep or vivid of the reds. All this is favoured by the soils composed of sand, granite, schist or mixed, in which the vineyards, an integrated part of the landscape, are located and which are beaten by sea winds all year round. It is precisely this proximity to the sea that contributes and gives rise to products with the most varied organoleptic characteristics and a strong territorial character.

A few hundred metres separate us from the sea at San Teodoro. The beauty of the land is not the only advantage. In fact, this position proves to be ideal for giving a unique connotation to the soil, which is mainly characterised by granite disintegration, clay and stone: the ideal structure for a vine. It is thanks to this that a close communication is established between the vine and the terroir, which tells its particularities.

Discover Sardinian archaeology. From the Tombs of the Giants to the sacred wells, a journey into the mystery of the Nuragic civilization.
It was brought to light in the thirties of the twentieth century, while searching for a source of water. It is no coincidence that the sacred well sa Testa was chosen by the Nuragic civilization that inhabited the territory of Gallura to honor the gods of the waters. Today it is an attraction of great appeal for lovers of archaeology and, in particular, of nuragic culture. The ancient sanctuary, dating from the fifteenth and thirteenth centuries BC, stands at the exit of the town of Olbia and has a structure less than eighteen meters long, made of granite, trachyte and schist, cut into carefully worked blocks. The external plan recalls the figure of a lock to symbolize a door between the world of the living and that of the dead. The structure is composed of a circular courtyard, a vestibule, a small room connecting the courtyard and the well and the steps leading to the well itself. The circular garden area, which you will enter through an entrance to the north, was dedicated to the collective rites of water worship. The door opens onto 17 steps leading to the perennial spring that flows from the depths of the earth. The access to the well is through a paving of shale slabs with, in the middle, an entrance channel that brings water from the outside towards the steps of the well. The well is partly covered by lintels. Its underground part, a circular chamber almost seven metres high, where water is collected, is covered, instead, with a false dome (a tholos). Inside the sacred area were found important finds, including some jewelry and a small dagger with a bronze hilt, part of a statuette perhaps embedded in the stone blocks.

Near the town of Olbia, a halo of mystery surrounds a place of nuraghic burials. In the tomb of Giganti de su mont'e s'Abe, unlike the thousands of prehistoric burials of its kind, the dead were buried in collective form. In the funeral hall were officiated the sacred rites related to the deceased but here, compared to what happened elsewhere, were not found in the sacred well the funeral documents that accompanied the deceased until the conjunction with the deity. The construction was built in two phases. In the first, dating back to the period of the culture of Bonnanaro, was built the tomb allée couverte - a sort of elongated dolmen -, then, around 1600 BC, was transformed into the tomb of Giants with exedra and stele, of which you can see some traces. The building, originally built in the shape of a bull's head, a god-giver of life, was bordered by a frontal semicircle. At the centre of the exedra were a four-metre high granite stele and, at the base, a small opening used as the entrance to the tomb. Inside, the tomb was formed by a chamber ten meters long, while the entire structure is still clearly visible 28 meters long and six meters wide, one of the largest in Sardinia.

The village of Aggius, in northern Sardinia, boasts a wonderful view dominated by the mighty massif of Limbara, whose highest peak, Punta Balistreri, rises to an altitude of 1,359 meters above sea level. Located at 514 meters above sea level, Aggius is a typical village of Gallura, surrounded by granite rocks, dry stone walls and nuraghi, at the foot of the serrated ridge called "Monti di Aggius", which includes the tips: "Monti di Mezu" (mt.782), "Monti Sotza" (mt. 778), "Monti Polcu" (mt. 675), "Monti di la Cruzi" (mt. 667), "Monti Pinna" (mt. 680) and "Monti Fraili" (mt. 645). The panorama extends from Asinara to the archipelago of La Maddalena and the Costa Smeralda. On clear days you can admire the windy Bocche di Bonifacio and the nearby Corsica with the recognizable cliffs of Capo Pertusato, while in winter and spring the high snow-capped peaks rise sharply. Aggius is a balanced alternation of granite rocks, centuries-old woods of holm oaks, cork oaks, Mediterranean scrub, pastures and vineyards, to which the changing of the seasons confers varied aspects and colours.

The Cave of Ispinigoli was opened to the public in 1974 and since then more than 40,000 visitors a year have entered the gigantic cavern where the majestic 38-metre-high limestone column stands, the largest in Europe and one of the highest in the world. The great hall belongs to the Ispinigoli - San Giovanni su Anzu - sos Jocos karst complex. It consists of three communicating caves with a total length of 17 km. This karst system is oriented in a south-west-north-east direction in the bowels of Mount S'Ospile, with three entrances opening at different heights. This creates pressure differences that generate a continuous air current inside, with the temperature remaining at 16-17 degrees in all seasons. The large galleries of this karstic cavity are characterised by considerable clay deposits, enormous columns and countless white concretions. At the bottom of this complex, small underground streams flow, which come to light in the nearby Grotta di San Giovanni Su Anzu. The system has been systematically explored since 1954 by the Gruppo Grotte di Nuoro (Nuoro Caves Group), which identified the connection between the two cavities. The research continued in the following years by the great experts of Sardinian speleology: Father Furreddu, Bruno Piredda and Eraldo Saracco from Piedmont, who lost his life in 1965 when he fell into the second shaft of the cave. The plaque at the entrance to the speleological branch is dedicated to him. In 1995, speleologists from Dorgali and Sassari found the connection between the Cave of Sos Jocos and that of San Giovanni di Su Anzu, although the entire complex has not yet been fully surveyed. The cave aroused great scientific interest because of the fossil finds of an otter from the Ice Age, important archaeological finds from the Nuragic (16th-16th century BC), Punic (6th-3rd century BC) and Roman (3rd century BC-6th century AD) periods, which testify to the long use of the karstic cavity as a burial and cult site. Among the findings are glass paste vases from the Punic period (6th - 3rd century BC) and the Roman and late Roman period (2nd century BC - 6th century AD). Initially, these findings fuelled the legend of a place linked to human sacrifices in Punic times, so the chasm was named The Abyss of the Virgins. Information: Also open in case of rain. It is a building dating back to the Middle Ages, built from typical local stone in a truly strategic position. In fact, its function was mainly to defend the territory of Civita and the borders with the Giudicato of Torres. The castle is reached via a small dirt road, where the outline of the fortification can already be seen, with the only remaining erected tower of the original four. The view from here is fantastic, from the plains to the city of Olbia. The castle is open every day free of charge to visitors and guided tours can be requested on payment.

From its almost 250 metres of altitude, atop the peak of Cabu Abbas, it controlled the arrival of enemy vessels from a strategic position, its horizon reaching as far as the island of Tavolara. The Nuraghe Riu Mulinu is one of the best known Nuragic fortifications in the north of the island. It rises a few kilometres from Olbia and can be dated around XIV-XIII BC. The central tower is well protected by a mighty wall that encircles the hill for 220 metres in length, with a height and width that reached up to five metres. The main characteristic of the wall is that it is embedded in the rocky outcrops along its perimeter. It opens into two entrances: one to the north, the other to the south. Inside the walls, the construction is a single tower with a circular shape of about eight metres in diameter.
