This is the smallest and more family friendly of the three ski mountains in Boone, but the closest to Buttermilk Acres at around a 30 minute drive. Definitely a good spot for first time skiers or boarders.

Beech Mountain is known for being the highest ski destination east of the Rockies. There's a lot of debate in the area as to which is the better ski mountain but personally me and Addie prefer Sugar in the winter and Beech for all the other seasons and here are a few reasons why. Beech's vert is about 400 feet less then Sugars and it doesn't offer as much terrain variation, plus its the furthest from Buttermilk at around 45 minutes. That being said Beech is better for all the other seasons, better views in fall, great mountain biking, a summer concert series that brings in big names a disc golf course and a brewery! Plus you get the feeling of a local seen that's non existent at Sugar.

Sugar Mountain is the areas biggest ski mountain and our personal favorite for winter. It has a summit elevation of 5,300 ft and 1,200 ft of vertical with 21 slopes. Sugar also offers the most advanced skiing south of Snowshoe and boasts the areas only double black, Woopdeedoo at 48 degrees. It's about a 35 minute drive from Buttermilk and a lot more accessible than Beech especially in the winter.
