Food scene

We have only listed places were we have regularly eaten ourselves and are therefore confident to recommend them.
Blanchland is a great little village to visit with its post office, coffee and gift shops. And not forgetting the Lord Crewe Arms for good beer, great food, friendly locals and super ambiance. Don't forget to check out the impressive chimney in the restaurant - it has been known hide a few Jacobites in the past!

The Black Bull Inn at Frosterley in Weardale serves a fantastic Sunday lunch. Very popular so important to book a table (Tel 01388 527784). The owners turned the clocks back to the1800s and restored the pub to how it had once been, small cosy rooms, stone flagged floors, open fires, Victorian ranges, wooden beams, copper, brass, pewter and oak, groaning with age. The Weardale railway and Frosterley station are 39 steps from the front door. The railway runs to the main rail network at Bishop Auckland.

Sightseeing

Northern England is full of fascinating places from the legacy of the Romans (Hadrian's Wall and associated Towns and Forts), the Medieval Castles and Border Reiver strongholds. This region is also synonymous with the development of the Railway.
Featherstone Castle and the South Tyne is well worth a visit because it offers a number of circular walks and a nice pub (Wallace Arms) at the end. Lambley Viaduct is worth a visit and from there the old track bed of the South Tyne Railway heads down to Alston in Cumbria

Alston and the South Tyne Railway is great day out. Only 20 miles away there is something for everyone! High up in the North Pennines, Alston claims to be the highest market town in England at about 1000 feet above sea level. It has several antique/boutique shops, pubs and cafes. The South Tynedale Railway is England's highest narrow gauge railway. The present line is now currently 5 miles in length, having recently been extended to Slaggyford. It provides superb views of South Tyne Dale.

Bult as part of a series of Norman Castles along the Tyne after the 1066 Norman conquest, Prudhoe was continuously occupied for over nine centuries. It was originally the home of the Umfravilles but was eventually taken over by the famous Percy family who restored it. Prudhoe survived two sieges during the 1170s and was the only Northumberland castle to resist the Scots. This year is Prudhoe's 30th anniversary of being open to the public as English Heritage first opened it in May 1986.

Historical

Mansion Cottage is located in the North Pennines which is steeped in history, particularly the industrial heritage of the lead mining industry. We have listed a few interesting places to visit.
The Derwent Valley is formed from the meetings of Beldon and Nookton Burns. This area used to be a centre of lead mining in the North Pennines. Many of these places are now listed historical monuments.

I have written a few details of walks that I frequently enjoy. Some will take in just the fabulous North Pennines scenery and others will include a little bit of interesting industrial heritage. Enjoy!

A 10 mile circular walk around Rotherhope Fell taking in spectacular views of Cross Fell - depending on the weather! The walk starts and finishes in Garrigill and at the time writing I am unable to confirm if the George and Dragon pub has reopened in Garrigill, but there are alternatives at Nent Hall and in Alston itself.

Part 1 of a South Tyne Circular Walk: Featherstone to Eals. For this walk I park the car near to Featherstone Castle and walk towards Lambley on the eastern bank of the river. The riverside path takes you through the old German POW camp. Cross the road and continue towards Lambley.

Found a great little walk recently. A nice 10 miles called the "John Martin Heritage Trail". The Southern Section to Allen Banks, Staward Pele and Langley Castle is a walk of about 10 miles taking 5 – 6 hours to complete. Grade : moderate walk with some steep ascents/descents.
