Nice small dog park + track. Very easy to get to, a lot of people come here in the late afternoons. Barbara Bush is known to come by here occasionally.

Houston Zoo is always fun to visit, especially during holidays. Halloween events encourage kids to come in costume, and wintertime Zoo Lights are always amazing. It is sandwiched in with the Museum District and the Medical Center. If you don't want to go into the zoo itself, Hermann Park literally surrounds it (and is free, with a cool train for kids).

Really nice area that has been recently updated. There's a great dog park, nice areas to walk/run around, and a lot of people enjoy seeing the bat colony that lives under the Waugh Dr. bridge.

Shopping, restaurants, bars... you name it, it's got it. It even has an enormous ice-skating rink. Just be prepared for how huge it is. EXTREMELY popular during holidays.
