Activities

If you are looking to book a trip with the Durango & Silverton NGRR, I recommend taking the train to Silverton and riding the bus back to Durango. This will allow you to experience the scenic route, which is what the train is all about, but you will be able to maximize your day by taking the bus back to Durango.

This escape room is a blast! My family participated in the "Jessie James" room. This is a fun activity for those that enjoy thinking on their toes and challenging their minds. I would not recommend an escape room if you are claustrophobic due to being locked in a room.

Food scene

Durango bagel is the only bagel shop in town and is located adjacent to the train depot. I recommend a parmesan bagel with veggie cream cheese. If you are looking to feed a group of people or just want bagels for your trip, you can purchase a bag of “day old” bagels. They throw a variety of bagels in a bag and sell it for $4 (a really great deal!).

If you are looking for a fairly quick but delicious breakfast, Raider Ridge is the place to go! All of the breakfast burritos are made from fresh ingredients. They offer "grab n' go" burritos if you are in a hurry, or you can make your own if you'd like. They are also one of the very few places in Durango that make smoothies. The Coco Cabana and Red Mango are great options.

Best pizza in Durango! Fired Up sells individual sized wood fired pizzas, so it is not recommended if you are trying to feed a family. This is the perfect location for 2-4 people. They are a little more on the pricy side, but it is so worth it! If you are looking for pizza to fee the whole family, I would check out Father's Daughters Pizza (just don't order the giant pizza. Doesn't seem to cook properly) or Homeslice Pizza.

Carver Brewing Co offers indoor and outdoor dining. The back patio is my favorite! They have great food, I personally enjoy their burgers, but be sure to ask what their seasonal dessert is. If you are lucky enough to be visiting Durango when they are serving their peach cobbler...you are in for a treat!

Jean Pierre offers tasty french pastries as well as a wine bar. You can't go wrong with the shortbread cookies, apricot strudel, or the lemon bar!

Coffee

Durango has many local coffee shops, but here are some of our favorites!
81301 is our go-to coffee shop in Durango! They offer a variety of coffee blends and in-house made syrups, making for the perfect lattes.

Magpies is another great coffee destination in Durango. What makes it special is the lovely sitting area out front, which makes it a perfect location for those traveling with dogs. They do sell breakfast burritos and other goodies as well. My go-to coffee drink here is an iced hazelnut latte with an extra shot of espresso. The Lavazza espresso that they use is amazing and is paired wonderfully with the Monín hazelnut syrup.

Animas Chocolate Co... I find myself daydreaming just thinking about their hot chocolate. Whether you're three or one hundred years old, Animas has something for everyone! I personally love their espresso...but I also love their hot chocolate, so my go-to drink is generally the “Quick N’ Dirty”. It is amazing! It’s the perfect combination for those that appreciate the flavor of espresso, but don’t want it to overpower the flavor of the hot chocolate.

This is a great morning/evening walk from our condo. It leads you to a pavilion made of stone that looks out over Durango. It's a perfect spot for a picnic if you're looking for a place to have lunch. The views are lovely!

Que faut-il apporter ?

Pack layers! Colorado is unpredictable sometimes.

Colorado is notorious for weather shifting in the blink of an eye. If you plan on spending any time hiking or exploring the San Juans, be sure to dress in layers. If you get too warm, you can remove layers and if you get too cold, well, you can add layers! Having a beanie or something to cover your ears as well as a warm pair of gloves is always best to have with you at all times (at least in your car, in your backpack, or close by).

Water Bottle & Deep Breaths

If you are new to Colorado there is a likelihood that you may experience some degree of altitude sickness. This happens because you are well above sea level, so there is less oxygen in the air causing symptoms ranging from mild dizziness to shortness of breath, and nausea. However, do not fear! Just be sure to pack a bottle of water for all your adventures in Durango, including your shopping sprees. Drinking a lot of water is key! And if you start to feel dizzy~ just slow your roll and take some deep breaths.
