Places to visit
Marburg is one of the university towns in Germany. It has a great pedestrianised area, full of charming corners and great buildings. Many houses resemble the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. There are a number of lifts available that take you into the top of the town, like the one at Oberstadt car park at the entrance of the town. Once you are up there, you can walk freely at your leisure. We also recommend a visit to the castle and a drink at the beer garden which has the most amazing views. Marburg is about 30km from Buchenblatt and the trip takes about 30 minutes.
Marburg has a very nice swimming pool as well - the Aquamar Sport- und Freizeitbad. It is currently open (as of 29 June), but tickets have to be reserved up to 3 days in advance on www.marburg.de/aquamar

We love going to Winterberg; both for skiing and in the summer. There is a nice atmosphere, cafes and restaurants and a nice rodelbahn for children.

Lots of old timber buildings to see here! Have a walk in the traffic-free zone and a nice drink or an ice cream at the many cafes.

Frankenberg Altstadt is a gorgeous area to visit and walk in, appreciating the local history. The clock bells ring at certain times of the day, with very long and elaborate tunes.

Bad Wildungen is an old spa town. Walk through the Quelle park and visit the Baden museum which is for free.

Bad Laasphe is a lovely pedestrianised town and it has a very nice and amusing mushroom museum which you can visit for free!

This is a great town with a castle at the top. If you feel like a nice uphill walk this is the place and you can rest with a drink at the top admiring the lovely views! There is an electric car charging point here.

History
This is a great place with a beautiful lake. It is a historic place as this is the dam that was burst by the UK air force during the second world war. Lots of lovely terraces and flat walk on promenades by the water and a nice boat ride. The drive to the Edersee Dam is 60km and takes about an hour.
The Kellerwald, a historic Forrest, is south of the Edersee. The route to the Edersee takes you past the visitor centre, the NationalparkZentrum Kellerwald which gives more information on the forest.

This is the house of the main illustrator of the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales. It is an absolutely enchanting place and it is managed by his great-grand niece. You can see the original illustrations, paintings and drawings for many popular fairy tales.

walking, cycling and swimming
We love this restaurant/cafe in winter and summer. There are lovely walks in the area and also a rodelbahn and mountain-biking using the skilifts in summer.
It is in WInterberg, about 4o km from Buchenblatt - please note that there are two routes from Buchenblatt, either East or West on the mountains. The route to the West of the mountain is very scenic and takes you past the Neuastenberg ski-resort, so you can vary the trip there and back.

Panoramapfad Hatzfeld
The best thing to do in Buchenblatt is walk though the countryside, and the Panoramapfad Hatzfeld passes a few meters from the front door of Buchenblatt. This is a panoramic walk over the hills, marked with a 'P' on trees. More details of the path are on

The walking paths connect, so you can walk almost anywhere, including to the Zum Edertal pub in Reddighausen

Eder Radweg
The new Ederradweg goes through Harzfeld near the river Eder. It follows an old railway line, including bridges and tunnels, as far as the Edersee. It is a bicycle path, but it is well-surfaced and very easy to walk on. Remember that there are two mountain bikes at your disposal at Buchenblatt! Details are on http://www.eder-radweg.de/
