An excellent Indian restaurant situated right next to the Market Hall, only 5 minutes walk from the cottage. Great array of traditional dishes, very reasonably priced, the staff are always available to offer advice on dishes if you aren’t sure what to have. The lamb shashlik bhuna is a personal favourite of mine!

This is a great local pub that is quit literally round the corner from the cottage. Having grown up down the Old Town we have enjoyed many a drink and laugh in here. A real “local” where you will find fishermen, sailors, tradesmen, businessmen. A perfect blend of bottom end characters. It has recently had a great face lift and is very well set out in terms of covid provisions. It also has some cracking local memorabilia on the walls and a log burner to the rear.

The Golden Ball pub is a great traditional pub that is part of the Samuel Smith’s brewery and the only one in Scarborough. The follow the Sam Smith’s ethos of “no music” so if you want a “quiet” drink (it’s usually very busy) this is a great spot. Situated on Sandside right opposite the Harbour, it has a lovely view from the front room, it also has a larger rear room and a smaller room downstairs with a second bar for very busy periods. They also have a beer garden. If memory serves me right they are dog friendly but I will have to double check.

This is a great cafe that doubles up as a restaurant on an evening. It’s situated on the West Pier and has a great view overlooking the harbour. This is a working pier so do take care when visiting to avoid fork lift trucks and be prepared for some very local smells! This cafe has served the fishermen, locals and visitors alike for decades in one form or another, it originally started as a hut in the car park many years ago and was called “The Tea Shack”, this term is still used by many locals.

Only a short drive over the moors and you get to the beautiful seaside town Whitby. The ruined gothic Whitby Abbey was the inspiration for Bram Stokers Dracula. Try famous Magpie Cafe for some fish and chips and afterwards walk the 199 steps for lovely views over the bay.

Sightseeing

A beautiful spot to head to with the kids or even just for a solo walk, and it is free of charge. The park has a lovely lake where in the summer you can hire dragon boats and rowing boats. It is also home to the famous Naval Warfare which is a must see for families. A unique attraction it was first performed in 1927 and see a battle between the smallest manned navy in the world. There is also a bandstand in the middle of the lake which plays musical concerts throughout the summer months. There are a number of cafes and kiosks around the park serving snacks, ice creams and refreshments. Peasholm park was designed within a natural glen with a stream running through it. It's a great place to explore nature, spot wildlife and enjoy some peace and quiet.

There is a huge Seal colony at the bottom of the cliffs at Raven Hall Hotel. It’s a sight to behold and well worth a visit with children especially. It’s quite a climb down the cliffs, there is a path and steps but quite steep at times. My four year old son managed it with a little help. I’d estimate it’s 1-1.5 miles down the cliff. I wouldn’t advise it after heavy rain and always make sure you go at low tide or an hour either side. Be careful on the rocks when you get to the bottom.

Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers is a statue by sculptor Ray Lonsdale which overlooks the North Bay. Made from weathering steel, the sculpture depicts Freddie Gilroy, a former soldier who participated in the liberation of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, sitting on a bench in his old age. Originally intended to sit on the seafront as a 4-week loan in 2011, a local resident Maureen Robinson donated money to purchase the sculpture for the town and dedicated it to her late husband. The statue is now owned by Scarborough Borough Council and is a very popular photo spot for locals an

Scarborough Castle was first established around 1155 by William Le Gros (Earl of York). It has stood every since. Perfectly situated to offer ultimate defence for the town. Situated high on the headland, both bays can be viewed with ease and any enemy ships could be seen for miles off. It’s a very popular visitor attraction now, reasonably priced for the full family, I recommend taking a picnic and spending the whole day exploring. Don’t forget the visit the Roman Signal station.

The best way to explore is by foot!

The cottage is located in an ideal location so it is usually easiest to walk to most places around the town. There is also good bus and train links to the surrounding towns such as Whitby, York and Leeds.
Coutumes et culture

Friendly locals in the Old Town.

The old town has lots of local fishing families and everyone is really friendly so don't be surprised if they say 'Hello' to you as they are walking past.

UK's oldest functioning Cliff Lift

Scarborough is quite hilly so why not take the old cliff lift from the seafront up to the town, or from the Spa up to the Esplanade on the South Cliff. The fares are £1.50 going up and £1.00 coming down.
