Bicheno is a beautiful seaside town on our spectacular east coast between Douglas-Apsley National Park and Freycinet National Park. Bicheno is a firm favourite with most Tasmanians, both as a family friendly destination and for those seeking a slower pace or sea change. It feels a little old-fashioned but the fishing industry is still very active so it’s worth indulging in a seafood lunch whilst visiting. Bicheno is a 2 hours 20 mins drive (182 km) from Hobart or 1 hour 20 mins (104 km) from Orford.

Swansea is a pretty seaside village that looks out over Great Oyster Bay to the spectacular granite peaks of Freycinet National Park, with a rich colonial history and old-world charm. The town is again surrounded by beautiful beaches and with Freycinet Peninsula in the distance, there are few towns in Tasmania that enjoy such beautiful scenery. Swansea is quiet, friendly and laid back, even when the town fills with holiday makers over the summer months. The town centre is home to many interesting historic buildings, with a terrific local history museum that shares the town's stories and artefacts. Just out of town, look out for the quirky Spiky Bridge, constructed by convicts using field stones laid without mortar or cement. Local cafes and restaurants serve Swansea's fresh harvests from land and sea - including the town's famous oysters. Swansea is a 1 hour 45 mins drive (145 km) from Hobart and 45 mins (57 km) from Orford.

This day trip is a must. You will need to catch the ferry to Maria Island which will take about 20-30 mins. Return tickets can be purchased online at https://encountermaria.com.au. The ferry leaves from Triabunna, which is about 7mins (7km) from Orford. A valid parks pass is required for entry to Tasmania's national parks. Once inside Freycinet National Park, follow the main road to the walking tracks car park. I believe tickets can also be purchased at the Gateway to Maria Island office (previously the Triabunna Visitor Centre) which is run by Parks & Wildlife located at the corner Charles St & Esplanade W, Triabunna

Distance from: Orford – 1 hour 35 mins (120 km) from Orford located in Freycinet National Park (Wineglass Bay Lookout car park) this popular trail takes you to one of the most stunning views in all of Tasmania - Wineglass Bay. It's simply not to be missed but, to actually see the wineglass shape of the bay, you'll have to hike a bit to get to this elevated lookout. Despite the ascent, this trail is suitable for just about everyone. You'll have to bring plenty of water and wear a bit of sunscreen, as the hike is mostly exposed, hot and dry. The track is well-worn and takes you over compact granite to some steps that are suitable for most. There are signs everywhere and you'll likely encounter plenty of people so there is no risk of getting lost. It's a great walk for the whole family and the entire trail should take you no more than 1.5 hours. A valid parks pass is required for entry to Tasmania's national parks.
