Food scene

Extraordinarily beautiful space. You'll feel like you're walking into a posh spa, and suddenly be worried about the prices, but surprisingly, the prices are gloriously low, and the food is incredible. Small plates, ramen bowls, wonderful variety of sake. Best food we've had to date in Detroit.

The oldest Mexican Restaurant in Detroit. Comfortable but intriguing decor, with old stained glass windows and actual art on the walls. Great food, from basic chips and home-made salsa to the most elaborate of authentic Mexican dishes - you won't be disappointed. And the margaritas are brilliantly mixed.

Can't say enough good things about Buddy's. If you want pizza or wings, this is your joint. They do deliver as well. You absolutely HAVE to have a Detroiter! It's like a Sicilian pie, only so so much better. Amazing yumminess. Promise.

Sightseeing

If you do nothing else while here, you must visit the DIA. A stunning building that holds one of the most unique collections of art and objects. And of course the only place to host a permanent Diego Rivera exhibit - in fact, and entire structure devoted exclusively to his murals.

Miles and miles of gorgeous winding walkable trails along the Detroit River, with the view of Windsor, Canada just across the water. Watch out for the geese (and their droppings), but a gorgeous place to come to for a picnic or a nice walk in nature. And if you're in the mood, visit the aquarium - possibly the oldest in the nation.

Acres and acres of trails, mostly along the shore of multiple connecting lakes. A tranquil, always clean and rarely packed park just 25 minutes from our house. Lots of restrooms, grills for a barbecue, and the vastness of beautiful Michigan nature. Also, not a bad spot to kayak, fish or pick mushrooms when in season.

The most international city (within a city) in the country! Hamtramck started out as a mostly Polish place where immigrants from Poland flocked for jobs and a better life. It has retained some of that identity as evidenced by the few remaining Polish bakeries (where you must buy Pączki, pronounced ponchiki). Over the decades, the city has welcomed thousands of immigrants from all over the world, and so now, there are at least 4 dozen languages spoken in this tiny, few square mile city within the city of Detroit. And it's lovely. Also, any kind of cuisine you're craving, no matter how exotic, you'll likely find it here.

People Drive Crazy in Detroit

Speed limits, stop signs and other traffic rules tend to be looked at as suggestions. It's not uncommon to see a line of cars going 95 in a 50 zone. And nobody gets pulled over for that, at least not that we'd seen. And always, always expect that someone might not stop at a red light or a stop sign and slow down when you approach these. It's just the nature of driving in this city.

Strangers will say hello to you & and it's ok!

You are likely to be greeted with a hello and a smile by a total stranger. It might be a Midwest thing or a Detroit thing, but it's bound to happen. Say hello back. It's just part of the charm of this place.
