Grand Marais Day Trips

West: This cottage is on H-58, a very popular scenic drive through the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Park. Follow this (seasonal) road west. In just over a mile, the first stop is Sable Falls - easy to descend but a calorie burner to climb the long staircase back to the parking lot. From the viewing platform, you can continue down the trail to the beach where the dunes begin. A mile further on H-58 is the Ranger’s station. Get a free map there. Picnic or fish at Sable Lake. Kayaking the entire length takes a full day. Eagles at the south end. Climb the dunes for a great view of Sable Lake or view the big lake after a short drive and walk to the Log Slide (top of the dunes). From there, hike to Sable Point light house. A few more miles to the mouth of the Hurricane. Walk east to discover lava flows and remains of a shipwreck. It is likely that you will need a minimum of 2 or 3 days to experience these stops and this 10-mile stretch of H-58. You will need at least a week, if you choose to hike the beach and dune trails. In Town: Walk the beach from Bayshore Park east to East Bay and Lonesome Point. Collect driftwood, pick a spot and have a bonfire on the beach as the sun sets. Water flowing from East Bay will probably cause you to stop short of Lonesome Point. There are four drive-up access locations along the harbor. Two provide parking right on the beach. One has a 600-foot hiking trail that can be challenging especially at night. There are restrooms at Bayshore Park. Park at Agate Beach for a view from the platform or park at the end of the point to walk to the end of the pier. East: Follow H-58 east. Explore the hundreds of logging trails and abandoned railroad grades. Find the disc golf course in the School Forrest. There are several streams and lakes for kayakers and fishermen. The Blind Sucker Flooding has pike and bluegill. Follow a sandy trail to find more secluded stretches of Lake Superior shoreline.
Beaches, Driftwood Bonfires, Sand Dunes, Water Falls, Fishing, Snowmobiling, Fresh air and Night Skies are all just outside your door! Microbrew, pizza and (seasonal) fresh white fish are a short walk away.

For evening and Sunday arrivals, plan your gas fill-up and shopping needs in advance – Main street is only a 2-3 minute walk away; However, this is a very small town and tourist traffic fluctuations can cause fluctuations in local business hours. Please check store hours including the Hardware Store, Restaurants, Grocery Stores and GM’s (only) Gas Station.
