In 1898 the Americans built a small fort near the Spanish Guánica lighthouse and named it Fort Capron, in memory of Captain Allyn K. Capron, who died in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. This fort has a SPECTACULAR VIEW of the entire bay and urban area of Guánica. The photos will be beautiful, this fort full of history you must visit. Now, you must be ready to walk about 40 minutes to go up to the place.
We recommend going prepared with water and visiting it for the day, wearing tennis shoes and comfortable clothes.

Located at the top of a hill in Ponce, the mansion was ordered to be built in the 1930s by Juan Eugenio Serrallés, son of Juan Serrallés, founder of the Serrallés Distillery that still produces Don Q rum. Eugenio was one of the most important men in the golden age of sugar cane in Puerto Rico and consequently of rum. The house, today the castle, is a beautiful work of art that reflects the good taste, history and Arab-Spanish influence of the time.
From the moment you enter the three-story mansion, you are captivated. On the first floor is the garage that today is part of the administration office that also has a small store. In the second, there is the main hall of the house with photos of the Serrallés family, original wooden tables, a 16th century vitrola, the library that faces the beautiful interior garden. There is also a living room, kitchen and dining room.
The dining room is one of the most impressive spaces in the house. Surrounded by windows that allow natural light to enter, a completely wooden ceiling that matches the chairs and tables. All handmade. The family fridge and some cooking supplies still remain in the kitchen.
On the third floor of the enormous old residence are the rooms of Juan Eugenio Serrallés and his wife, Dona Rosa. For these times the rooms were separate. Doña Rosa's has all its wooden furniture, accessories and clothing. Its vintage bathroom is also striking. On this floor there is also a large terrace overlooking the town and the Caribbean Sea. One of the rooms was created to summarize the evolution of Hacienda Mercedita.
The Watcher's Cross and Japanese Garden
Once you arrive and pay for your ticket - it depends on the selection - you first visit the Cruz del Vigía. In this enormous structure you will have a panoramic view of the Ponce town as well as the Caribbean Sea. Here you can also see the recreation of a bodeguita from the 1930s with period objects. Then, you walk in front of the cross to get to the Japanese Garden. This garden transmits peace and tranquility. There are different plants and benches where you can relax appreciating nature.

A beautiful little waterfall, river, and natural pool. This incredible natural place will take you to the pure experience of connecting with nature. You can get down to the river via a path on the left side of the bridge, or down a little road on the right (it really depends on when you want to get wet!). We went on the left side and were able to get pretty close to the waterfall. Getting to the natural pool requires going into the water. It’s a nice place to spend a little time and cool off.
Suggestions, it is not recommended to go with children. You have to walk about 5 minutes between roads and the river. It is very important that you verify the weather report for the area, if it is raining you should not go.

Here, you need to climb up and down until you find the rock at the top that provides the best photo ops.

* Allow a minimum of 1 hour for hiking, and taking photos.
