Its a jungle out there! Pahoa is located in a tropical rain forest on the Southeast side of the Big Island of Hawaii. The town of Pahoa is a small eclectic town with a hippy casual friendly vibe. This small town reminds me of the old west with one street going through the middle of town. There are many stores lining the street, wonderful small restaurants, gift shops, crystal store, ice cream shop, bank, 7-11, community pool. It has character! You never know what you will see. The locals come from all walks of life and they refer to themselves as Punatics. (Pahoa is in the Puna district). They even have T-shirts (Proud to be a Punatic). In the newer section of the town of Pahoa you will find a grocery store (Malama Market), and a new shopping mall (Puna Kai Shopping Center), restaurants, shops, gas, and the best fried fish restaurant (Pahoa Fresh Fish), great ice cream shop and so much more. (Budget travel included Pahoa in the top 15 coolest small towns across the country 2014, and Outside Magazine ranked Pahoa #2 for travel award for best Adventure Hub 2014.). Pahoa is 6 miles from the historic Enchanted Red Road, one of the best scenic drives on the Big Island that stretches for 15 miles along the gorgeous coast. As you follow this road through the lush tropical setting reminiscent of Old Hawaii, you will encounter dangling jungle vines and a canopy of trees making it feel like a living tunnel with incredible views of the turquoise water and black lava cliffs. There are places to pull off to the side of the road and take pictures. This same road leads to a newly formed black sand beach at Isaac Hale Beach Park, and one of the prettiest black sand beaches by mile marker 19 is Kehena Beach (swim, dolphin and whale watch, Sunday morning drumming circle, clothing optional). There are many farmers markets in the Pahoa area including, Uncle Roberts, Kalapana-Kaimu’s Farmers Market (Wednesday nights, Saturday mornings). Wednesday nights at Uncle Roberts is a festive night which includes a live band, dancing, food, vendors…It’s a great time! Another is the Maku’u market on Sunday’s. Other local attractions in the area include: Panawa Zoo (free admission), Macadamia Nut Factory (tours, and samples), chocolate factories, Lava tree state park.

Food scene in Pahoa

Some of our favorites: The Tin Shack Bakery; I recommend grabbing a breakfast sandwich (biscuit, egg, bacon, sausage, cheese...) or their other breakfasts look wonderful too. Fresh bread and pastries are made here daily. They have soup and sandwiches, and many other tasty item as well as coffee and cappuccinos. Oh the cinnamon rolls are huge! Open 7 am to 2 pm daily. This is an open-air little restaurant. Nothing fancy, great food, good prices. I would go here, grab food for the day and take to the beach or other adventures. Breakfast, lunch, brunch. Friendly people, very local and authentic, is a good way to describe. Try the bagel cream cheese with a side of bacon, put bacon on the bagel. Yummy. Also try the carrot cake. I Want Ice Cream; this is a mom and pop ice cream shop…located in strip mall with Pahoa Fresh Fish. This is really good ice cream. Large portions. Dan likes the chocolate cherry the best. I like the coffee ice cream. They have many other flavors. They even make an ice cream out of poi, the purple potato. Ask for a sample. It’s really good too and very different. Ning’s Thai Cuisine, everything we have had there is wonderful and very flavorful. Boogie Woogie Pizza, Great Pizza’s! Kaleo’s Bar and Grill, patio seating and indoor seating, large menu selection Pele’s Kitchen, good breakfast and lunch Luquins Mexican, good food, good value. By Longs Drug and the roundabout. Black Rock Diner, good food, good value. Farmer's Markets have great food too! • Pahoa has a large market. Called the Maku’u Market on Sunday’s Located 15-2131 Keaau-Pahoa Rd. in Pahoa Features: vendors, artist, music, food, locally grown fruit and vegetables. Our favorites are the Garlic Shrimp vendor. You get a nice meal for $13. Garlic shrimp with rice. We like the crepes and get the sausage crepe. Another is the burrito vendor, they make huge burritos. • Hilo has a market every day of the week. On Wednesday and Saturdays are the “Big Market” days. More vendors. Local farmers, artisans, crafters, retailers, food vendors. Over 200 vendors on the Big Market days. Otherwise 20 to 30. Hours are usually 7 am to 4 pm. Uncle Roberts Awa Bar (Kalapana-Kaimu’s Farmers Market) 12-5038 Kalapana Kapoho Beach Road, now open Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings. Wednesday nights are a local favorite. It seems everyone gathers. It is food, music, dancing, live entertainment at times (flame dancers or acrobats), food trucks, food vendors, artisans, etc…Very, very casual atmosphere. This can be a fun place to dance and people watch. Locals and visitors come here and its well-known and gets very busy so get there early. Pull up to the front, there is parking for $5, its worth it. Otherwise, you will see people parking for a mile down the sides of the street. Get there early enough, 4:30 or 5 ish, park and head to ocean, beautiful and peaceful sunset. Many just sit quiet and watch the sunset. Then head back to the market area. Get some really good food. If you see someone selling LauLau. A native Hawaiian cuisine dish. that is pork, salted pork fat on top of fish wrapped in a taro leaf. You eat the taro leaf and the stuff inside. It is very tender. I liked it more that I thought. (some are wrapped in a ti leaf, then taro leaf… do not eat the ti leaf, but you can eat the taro leaf.) The pizza truck has great pizzas. Also, a place in the back to the left, has chicken and beef skewers. Lilikoi lemon drink is good too. There was a chef their who made a garlic noodle shrimp scampi that was amazing. I didn’t see him their last time. Everyone is free to be who they are here, you will see what I mean. It’s wonderful. Have a great time. Dance like no one is watching because that’s what everyone else is doing. That’s what people do here. *Oh, you will most likely meet a vendor (a man with a big personality) who offers you a sample of a health drink made from ginger and turmeric, I don’t know what else is in it, other healthy ingredients. It is hot! I try to buy a bottle each time I am there. He is funny and says it makes your eyes shiny. And it does. A true story, I used it for 2 weeks, met with some new friends, and one commented how shiny my eyes were. I just had to smile to myself because I thought he was kidding. He also sells his organic fruits and vegetables. There is a sand beach near Uncle Roberts, called the New Black Sand Beach and is a short hike from the lava covered parking lot on top of the hill near market area. The path is lined with newly started palm trees. Beautiful spot for sunset viewing and photos. Ok, my all time favorite restaurant is in Hilo. Naung Mai Thai Kitchen, located in Hilo, 86 Kilauea Ave, (behind Pineapples Restaurant.) This small, hidden gem of a restaurant is one of our favorites. It only has about 8 to 10 tables in the whole place. It’s one of those places you hope to find. The chicken pineapple coconut curry is amazing!!! I (Mandy) order this every time. We make a point to go here each time we are on the island. Everything has been wonderful. Dan had a chocolate peanut butter non-dairy ice cream. Dan said the best ice cream he has ever eaten. Everyone we have brought there, has loved it.
Our favorite fish place! The fried fish is great, crab patties, shrimp…everything is really good. This is a local favorite. I thought it was a bait shop when I first saw it. Don't let the look fool you. There are only a few tables and plastic chairs, so you will most likely want to take this food to go. Usually we call in an order 25 minutes ahead and we take it home, or we go to one of the parks, and many times we open the box and eat it before we get home. We have come to like the local fish called Ono. Ono in Hawaiian also means, wonderful. So, you could say the Ono is Ono. If you order the large platter, it comes with about (5) pieces of fish, coleslaw, tarter sauce and really good fries. Dan and I share one of these large platters and it’s enough. Try a side of crab patties, and well worth it.

Fun little boutique

This little shop has very interesting and unique gift items, clothing and more. I love their sarongs and dresses, very soft and colorful. Beautiful fabrics and great prices. This is where you can find your "proud to be a punatic" shirts too! You will most likely be driving to this area to get gas or groceries, it is located by the Ace Hardware in Pahoa. You can't miss it, it's by the round-about (lol, there is only one in Pahoa), take the exit like you are going to the gas station.

Que faut-il apporter ?

Pack light, bring good hiking shoes, water shoes for ocean,

The weather in Pahoa, is usually 65 degrees at night, and 85 degrees during the day. (give or take a few degrees). And everything is very casual attire. Keep it simple, you don't need many clothes, it is warm during the day. Shorts, t-shirts, of course Hawaiian shirts, sundress. You will probably find yourself wearing your swim suit with a sarong or cover up most of the time. There are some great hikes, so you will want good tennis shoes or hiking shoes. Also, you may want to bring some water shoes to wear in the ocean, there can be some sharp lava rocks you need to walk over.

Sunscreens- which ingredients to avoid to protect the Ocean

It's important to have good sunscreen and it's important to know which sunscreen ingredients are banned for use in the ocean in Hawaii. Sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate, were banned in 2018, by law, for their harmful effects to the oceans. Do not use sunscreen containing these ingredients if you are going into the ocean. There are 2 other petrochemical ingredients to avoid, they are dangerous to oceans as well, although not legally banned yet, they are avobenzone and octocrylene. Lets work together to keep our oceans happy. Mahalo
Coutumes et culture

Lava Rocks - please do not take any sand or lava rocks home.

You may or may not know this, but it's illegal to take lava rocks and sand out of Hawaii. And people that do take them off the island, end up mailing them back. Why? Whether you believe in this or not, when lava rocks are taken from Hawaii, they cause bad luck (Pele's curse -Goddess of volcano's fire and lightning), so much so, that they mail them back. The sand and lava belong here and it is sacred. Please just don't take them off the island, its not worth the risk. Mahalo
