No visit to Looe would be complete without a visit to Looe's smaller neighbour, Polperro. Full of rich, smuggling history, narrow streets, quirky shops and delicious food, all centered around Polperro's sheltered harbour, you could easily spend several hours wandering around this village like no other.

The Old Guildhall Museum and Gaol is contained in a 15th Century listed building with a fascinating display of Looe’s past. This includes Fishing & Boat Building Smuggling Looe Island The Looe Valley Railway Line Tourism World War II Court room regalia The building itself is a marvellous exhibit on its own, as it retains many of its Medieval features, with ancient cells and the original raised magistrates bench, complete with the Royal Coat of Arms, from when the local court was held there. With exhibits from the Bronze Age to the modern day, there’s no shortage of things to look at, domestic equipment, 17th century porcelain, regalia, model boats, the remains of a WWII US bomber and much more besides, including a large archive of old photographs. The museum is spread over two floors and you enter into the upper floor of the building, which from 1587 to 1878, was the East Looe Town Hall and Magistrates Court. Beneath the magnificent timber-framed roof, laws were made and enforced, and the town was administered by the Mayor and Corporation, known as Burgesses. Downstairs, you will find more exhibits, plus the two cells used to hold the criminals of Looe in the past. This really was a case of 'send them down' from the court above.

Food scene

Run by the most welcoming family, The Old Sail Loft serves superb, fresh, day caught fish, cooked to perfection and served in the historic restaurant dating back centuries. One of the oldest buildings in Looe, still largely preserved in its original form, the cellar and loft are known to date back at least 450 years. Reputed to be a former haunt for smugglers and sea faring men of the 16th Century, it was then known locally as “The Run” probably due to it's time honoured association with smuggling which was rife along the Cornish coast. Sitting in the snug comfort of the very special atmosphere generated by no small part by it's historical associations, it is not difficult to imaging the old sailing boats of the early 1500s moored to the quay outside. The Old Sail Loft is one of the top Restaurants in Looe. Open Evenings and for lunches. We specialise in Steaks & fresh local fish from the quay, a`la carte and bistro. We are on the quay side overlooking the harbour,
