Food Scene

While this is the only local dinner restaurant in town, the food is actually pretty good (the parmesan-crusted haddock is my personal favorite)! Keep in mind that this is Milbridge, so the restaurant often closes early, although the bar is often open later (call to check hours), and they are closed on most Sundays and Mondays.

Lunt's is one of the many lobster pounds along the drive into Bar Harbor & Acadia (on Route 3, just across from the Bar Harbor jet port). It's also one of our favorites, because it's really a 'mom & pop' shop ~ very friendly. They serve a wonderful blueberry ale (beer) and amazing lobster, of course, freshly cooked just outside the doors. They also have LOTS of Maine-themed stuff to purchase ~ trinkets, kitchen towels, Christmas ornaments, key tags, &c, &c. They have a kids menu, too! Great place!

Acadia Puffin Cruise hosts a 2.5-hour cruise along Frenchman Bay and out to Petit Manan Island (and lighthouse). Along the way you'll have incredible views of Mount Desert Island and the Schoodic Peninsula. If you are unfamiliar with Maine's Atlantic Puffins, then you're in for a visual treat! Maine is the only U.S. State that is breeding home to the Atlantic Puffin (most are found in Iceland, Norway, Greenland, Newfoundland, Ireland & parts of the UK). As a side note, we've seen Atlantic Puffins land right in front of The 'G' Spot Maine! If you've never seen an Atlantic Puffin, look them up.

While it's located on the Canada side of the Bay, it's just northeast of Eastport Maine, so there are local sightseeing boats that will take you there. By the way, the tidal shift in Eastport is 25 feet, which is something to see in and of itself.

Somes Sound borders Acadia National Park and nearly splits Mount Desert Island in two. It is geographically unique because it's the only fjard (originally considered a fjord until recently) of its kind on the East Coast. Along the north edge of Somes Sound is Somesville which is the oldest settlement on Mount Desert Island and is utterly quaint & picturesque. One of the most photographed man made structures on Mount Desert Island is the arched wooden foot bridge that sits next to the historic Selectmen’s Building (c. 1780) in Somesville.

Tidal Falls is part of the Frenchman Bay Conservancy. It's a small, (usually) not terribly busy place with a close-up view of Tidal Falls. What's Tidal Falls? It's a 'reversing' falls, meaning that when the tide is going out, the rapids go one way, and when the tide is coming in, the rapids go the opposite way. Pretty cool, actually, because it's also where fresh & saltwater mix, making it home to many types of birds and wildlife. It's also a nice place to bring the family and picnic because there are tables and iron grills. Perhaps best of all, it's open to the public (but no dogs allowed).

If you're into history and/or the supernational, then this is a great place to go. It is the largest historic fort in Maine. It was also the first fort (in Maine) built entirely of granite (constructed between 1844 and 1869) and is one of the best-preserved military fortifications on the New England seacoast. Perhaps because if its solid granite structure and proximity to water, it's considered to be extremely haunted. On that note, if you enjoy interesting Halloween jaunts, Fort Knox hosts a haunted Halloween each year (check their website for dates & details).

Besides being a gasoline and a quick 'essentials' stop (beer, wine, milk, bread, eggs), they have great pub/grill food! Freshly made pizza, burgers (including haddock), fried chicken, steak & cheese subs, French fries, and much more. And they are a liquor store, too, just in case you’re a bit thirsty on the way in. ;)

Bad Little Falls Park is in the town of Machias. Interestingly, and coincidentally, 'Machias' is a Wabanaki word that means “bad little falls”. The falls itself is where large loads of freshly-cut trees were sent downstream to awaiting boats and barges. Many lumbermen lost their lives at this 'little falls' because the logs were squeezed together, due to the confines of the falls itself, and often got jammed. Below the falls, is an estuary area that is visited by eagles, osprey, sea and shore birds, seals, and migratory fish, including endangered Atlantic salmon.

Also known as 'Ray Murphy's Chainsaw Show', this is another interesting place that you'll pass as you head east towards Milbridge. He's located on Route 1 in Hancock, ME and you won't miss the huge American eagle (holding two chainsaws - one in each claw) painted on the side of his metal warehouse. Mr. Murphy has been doing chainsaw art for decades and was even featured in 'Ripley's Believe It or Not' and earned his own question in the 'Trivial Pursuit' game. His shop is usually open June thru September and his shows are often on Saturdays, but you can always look him up and give him a ring.

Per their website: The Downeast Institute for Applied Marine Research & Education located on Beal’s Island, raises between three and five million seed clams annually for 60 Maine communities. The Downeast Institute offers guided tours of their shellfish nursery. More information is available by calling George Protopopescu at the telephone number provided or by visiting their website. On a personal note, Beal's Island is just gorgeous and is well worth the visit, just by itself. :)

The 151′ Schooner Margaret Todd is well-known in the DownEast area. If you go into the Bar Harbor webcam (BarHarborCam.com), you will see the anchored Margaret Todd (once warmer weather begins) in the webcam shots. It's a glorious vessel, especially under full sail!! In fact, Bar Harbor hosts numerous tour and ferry boats and is a superb place to bring the whole family, if only for an afternoon. DownEast Windjammer Cruise Lines has three cruise options ~ 151' Schooner Margaret Todd, 91' Schooner Bailey Louise Todd, and a six-passenger Chrissy Lobster Sloop. Reservations are required, of course, and may be purchased on their website, downeastwindjammer.com.

If you have children along on your vacation, then you might want to make a stop at Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf (children 3 and under play free) in Bar Harbor (it's on the way to Acadia). It's, visually, a pretty cool place with water features and a large pirate ship...oh, and golf. :)

Per the website: Built in 1818, this historic house museum is a classic example of Adamesque style Federal period architecture and is located in the village of Columbia Falls, Maine. The famous flying staircase is a central feature. At the end of the eighteenth century, Thomas Ruggles came from Rochester, MA, to a settlement called 'plantation 13' in the vast, forested, northern part of the state that, in 1820, became the state of Maine. Ruggles made a fortune there, amassing thousands of acres of virgin timber and exporting the lumber in his own ships; he also achieved the status that accompanies great wealth in a new society. Head of the militia, first postmaster (the place was renamed Columbia in 1796), and chief justice of Court of Sessions in Washington County, he able to build this house, extraordinary both for its time and ours, although he was not destined to enjoy it for long. Begun in 1818 the house was completed in 1820; Ruggles died in December of that year. (A small cemetery just outside of what is called Columbia Falls today, population 600, has his modest tombstone.

While there are numerous places to rent kayaks and canoes down in the Bar Harbor area, we are a bit limited up in DownEast area of Maine. Sunrise Canoe & Kayak, however, does rent both kayaks and canoes and is located approximately 35 minutes North of Milbridge in the town of Machias (pronounced muh-CHAI-us). Best of all they DELIVER TO MILBRIDGE! :D

Per their website: The Down East Sunrise Trail is 87 miles and is the longest off-road trail on the East Coast Greenway through a natural landscape of green forests and vast marshes, habitat for iconic moose, beavers, eagles, wild turkeys and white tail deer. Open to bicycles, walking, horses, cross country skiing, ATVs, snowmobiles and the occasional dog sled, the trail offers a multi-season chance to see downeast Maine in a new and very old light. This inactive rail corridor is an unpaved tour of the back country with gentle grades and opportunities for lodging, dining, camping, recreational fishing and learning about downeast history. In other words, a great place for hikers or those who have ATV's with them.

Blue Hill is approximately one hour away (West) of Milbridge, but they do rent kayaks, as well as all of the pertinent safety supplies (life jackets, whistles, wetsuits). They also rent paddle boards, canoes, bikes, and sailboats. It is strongly suggested that you contact them in advance of your trip to determine availability (and the possibly/probability of delivery vs pickup). A fun place for the whole family (including the dog!!), especially if you have older 'kids' who would like to try their hand (well, feet) at log rolling (this is a separate lesson, not combined with the 'show'). The lumberjack shows are every evening at 7:00pm (you must purchase tickets), EVERY night (as in 7 days a week) mid-June through the end of August. 'Timber Tina' Scheer was a Castaway on CBS’s Survivor: Panama – Exile Island. She was also a competitor on National Geographic Channel's Ultimate Survival Alaska. She has been competing in lumberjack sports since she was 7 years old. She's been a World Champion in both Log Rolling and Jack & Jill Crosscut Sawing. She's also a silver medalist in ESPN's Great Outdoor Games. This is her place and it's a local favorite. For more information, visit their website, mainelumberjack.com.
