De Kas restaurant & nursery garden is located in a set of greenhouses at Park Frankendael, which dates back to 1926. The restaurant works with the idea that food tastes best when it is prepared with the freshest, local ingredients. Therefore they grow their own herbs and vegetables in the greenhouses and gardens at the restaurant and on their farmland in the Beemster area. There is a daily created one fixed menu, based on the harvest of the nursery garden, supplemented with the best additional ingredients from local suppliers. It is a high end kitchen; bring enough money.

Drinks & Nightlife

A local beer brewery since 1985, owned by a local, brewing the distinctive kind of quality beers ‘t IJ has become known for. Brouwerij ‘t IJ gradually grew into the biggest and best known brewery of Amsterdam. Funenkade 7 Phone: +31 20 622 8325 Opening hours: 14:00 hrs and closes at 20:00 hrs every day of the year, including holidays. Most of the beers they brew are available on tap in their pub. In summertime there are also long tables outside on the terrace, and in wintertime you’ll find shelter between the old bathhouse walls. Of course this place is mainly about the beer, but for those who don’t appreciate this beautiful kind of drink, there are a few wine, juice and soda options. Food wise they offer a basic menu of tasty beer snacks. A selection of a few cheeses, sausages and other bites they expect go down very well with their beer. You’ll find all the options on the menu. Farm De Dikhoeve collects what we call “bostel” (= malt pulp) as fodder for their sheep’s at their farm De Dikhoeve. With the milk of the sheep that eat the brewing leftovers, farm De Dikhoeve produces delicious, soft, organic, white mould cheese: the Skeapsrond is available in the bar, where it pairs just great with many of their beers. The Skaepsrond is also available in the better cheese stores in and around Amsterdam like Erik's Delicatessen. There is no table reservation, so come early or make friends ☺.

TunFun is an indoor playground designed for kids up to 13 (they do not encourage kids older than 13 to play in it) with lots of slides, trampoline, ball pool, bridges, tunnels for a young energetic child to climb and run around. TunFun is located opposite the Portuguese Synagogue next to the Jewish Historical Museum. It's easy to get to - 4/5 stops with tram 9 to Central Station. The location of TunFun used to be a former traffic underpass, you can still see the road and the curb. The cost is € 8.50 per child and adults are free! This makes total sense since an adult has to supervise their children at play. There is a small canteen area for drinks and snacks, nothing to write home about. But a great place to be when it's raining cats and dogs outside! There is a lot of noise, and happy voices. Open daily 10- 18h (Box office closes at 17h)

While it is not as big or popular as the Vondelpark, it is very close to our apartment. On summer days it’s really busy and cosy, as locals do like to hang out in the park, have their small children play in the pool, have a drink with or without a barbeque. On the whole it gives the park a relaxed atmosphere.

Arts & Culture

The Hollandsche Schouwburg was built as a theatre in 1892, but during the Second World War it was a deportation centre for Jews. Jews were arrested and held prisoner in large numbers in the Hollandsche Schouwburg. The individual memories that thousands of victims have about their captivity in the theatre, the cynicism of transforming a place of entertainment into a scene of calamity, the rescue operations both from the theatre and the nursery, all these and other factors have given the Hollandsche Schouwburg its unique place in the story of the persecution of Dutch Jews. Today, the building is a monument to the memory of those victims. The monument contains a memorial wall, bearing the 6,700 family names of the 104,000 Dutch Jewish victims of the Second World War. Right across the street from the Hollandsche Schouwburg, at number 31 Plantage Middenlaan, there was a nursery, or day care centre, for small children. In January 1943 Walter Süskind (manager of the theater during the Holocaust) and Joop Woortman (a non-Jewish resistance worker) together with Henriëtte Pimentel (director of nursery), worked out escape routes for children from the nursery. This way they managed to get some 600 children from the theater to escape through the opposite nursery. Initially, they chiefly smuggled out babies in bags or some kind of carrier, took them to Amsterdam's Central Station, and handed them over to people from the resistance. Later on other methods were developed. Children escaped through adjacent premises or gardens or 'disappeared' while out for a walk. The resistance workers then placed the babies with families throughout the country.
