Sightseeing

Alnwick castle has been home to the Percy family for over 700 years and is a must see when you visit. This castle was fetured in Harry Potter, Blackadder, Downton Abbey and even the new Transformers movie. It's a great family day out. Tip: if you do visit the castle make your way down the hill towards the Lion bridge after and take a walk through the filed along the river, you will get spectacular views and see the castle in all its glory.

The Alnwick Gardens is famed in the UK for it's spectacular landscaping and of course the tree house that you can see as you enter the car park. My tip would be to take a picnic down and sit on the grass and marvel at the 120 water jet Grand Cascade before wondering through the poison garden and having fun with the interactive waterfalls. Again the Alnwick Gardens is just a short walk from the Bakehouse Upstairs so save on parking and have a wonder down.

Parks & Nature

Great park for a family walk or any enthusiastic runners. There are many different trails that take you through woods, fields, farms and along the river. For me i love to run here, through some of the wood trails it's just me the Deer's and of course the Pheasant's.

Be mindful if you do decide to take a trip here. The turning is easy to miss! It's a great walk through some beautiful fields and woods, which lead up to a "cave" (i say this lightly as its more of an indent of rocks). If you walk further up you'll come out of the woods and get the most amazing view of the coast. On a clear day you can see Bamburgh castle, and Holy island.

Arts & Culture

Check out the Alnwick Playhouse and see what they have on during your stay. The Playhouse is just a short walk from The Bakehouse upstairs and there's a fab Italians opposite. However be mindful that the Italians do not take reservations. I like to wonder down, put my name in for a table and have a drink at the pub next door if they are busy. Then head to the playhouse for an enjoyable evening.

Food Scene

A 15 minute drive north of Alnwick, The Joiners Arms is a must! A little on the pricey side, you might be put off, but you wont be disappointed. Their menu is great for anyone who is gluten intolerant as all of their battered items can be made with GF batter. Even better, is their take-away F+C for all those who want to eat dinner while watching the waves roll in on one of Northumberlands more secluded beach (footballers cove).

Best butchers in Alnwick (my opinion). Turnbull's (a family run butchers) has been a staple on the high street for almost 40 years. Along with their fantastic meat selection Turnbull's also offers some beautiful home made ready to cook meals, which come in all sizes. It's a quick fix if you don't want to eat out every night, but are exhausted from a day full of activities.
