If you’re seeking an eco-friendly, surreal experience, you should include a bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico when planning your trip. But, what is a bioluminescent bay or bio bay? These rare ecosystems happen when microscopic, single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates grow in quantities big enough to produce a “glow-in-the-dark” effect when stimulated by movement. So, when you paddle or splash the water, these organisms light up in a neon blue-green color, and so does everything they come in contact with, giving a star-like reflection to the water. Dinoflagellates can be found throughout the ocean; however, it is very rare for them to be live in concentrations high enough to be noticeable. To put this in perspective, there must be thousands and thousands of these single-celled organisms to make a gallon of water light up. There are only five ecosystems in the world where the concentration of these planktons is high enough to be considered bioluminescent bays, and Puerto Rico is home to three of them. Laguna Grande Fajardo (only 20 minutes from Wald Haus) Out of the three bio bays in Puerto Rico, Laguna Grande in Fajardo is the only one that’s not technically a bay. The narrow and long canal that leads to the dazzling “glow-in-the-dark” water makes this unique waterbody a lagoon. It is the most visited bio bay in Puerto Rico due to its proximity to San Juan. There are many different tour providers, one company we like to recommend is Kayaking Puerto Rico

Charco Frio is a series of pools in the river that you can enjoy cooling off in on a hot day. It takes a little while to get to this river. But once you find it (located just off of Road 971 in Ceiba), you can just park your car and find a nice secluded spot to sit and enjoy the cool river pools (or charcos, in Spanish). I was amazed how crystal clear the water was. You will notice a blue color when it is deep. Really pretty!

This place is not for everyone. It requires some adventurous spirit, and strong legs & arms to climb up the river and rocks to get to the pay off — the falls and the pools. We highly recommend the easy (and honest) way of going there — go to the very end of the road (past the parking for Charco Frio) and pay to park at the owner’s lot, and then take the beautifully easy trail right to swimming area.

The Island Originally established in 1938 as a research colony to study Indian rhesus monkeys, the island is now home to approximately 1,000 monkeys. Though you cannot enter on to the island, La Paseodora takes you near enough to see the monkeys well and safely. The Cruise In addition to viewing monkeys, you can snorkel from the boat. Masks, snorkels, water shoes, and a basic kayak are provided. There is a shipwreck (a cargo boat that sank in 1944) that is home to many tropical fish. Giant, orange starfish are easily spotted in the clear Caribbean water. The Experience This is a very family friendly activity! Captain Paco plays a conch shell and provides traditional Puerto Rican instruments for his passengers during the short ride out to the island. Bring your own drinks, but wonderful, simple sandwiches of ham and cheese on delicious local bread are served on the boat. La Paseodora provides shade, padded seats, and more than ample room to move around. This is an experience for those who enjoy nature, being on the water, and a kind, fascinating guide. There are no restroom facilities on the boat.

This beautiful house was built in 1917 by Don Faustino Rodríguez Fuertes, a local sugar cane plantation owner. The style of the house combines victorian elements with "criollo" components such as hydraulic tiles. In 1977, the seafront residence was included in Puerto Rico's national register of historic places. Nowadays, you'll only find the abandoned structure of the house, but even in despair, it's still possible to appreciate the architectural beauty of this historic residence.
