Le Guide ai Quartieri

You are in one of the most characteristic streets of the historic center of Florence! Via del Moro it’s a pretty narrow street dotted with the most beautiful antique shops and it’s the place where street artists love to leave their marks with their fascinating urban art. Throughout Florence, if you have a keen eye, you will find traces of Street Art marked by the signature of famous artists such as CLET ABRAHAM who enjoy “defacing” road signs with his ironic messages, BLUB with his “art that knows how to swim” and ACHE77 with his famous stencils including the face of a woman who looks straight into your eyes. CURIOSITY: at the intersection of Via del Moro with Via della Spada you can spot at the top of a house facade, a tiny railed window called “finestrella” (small window) placed right below a large window. Its purpose was to give kids the opportunity to look down the road without the danger of falling. More of this typical children’s window can be found around the city. MY SELECTION OF PLACES YOU CAN’T MISS OUT ON THIS STREET: -L’OSTERIA DI GIOVANNI: The best Florentine steak in Florence is cooked by Giovanni! This tavern, surrounded by a vaulted cellar, immerses you in a typical environment of italianism and conviviality peculiar of Florentine people. It offers the most traditional and genuine Tuscan cuisine in an elegant setting, this is the reason why it is very popular between locals.Giovanni is open every day for dinner. -A CASA CA.FE BISTROT: right down the road, at the corner with Via della Spada, you can find a little part of paradise where you can have your breakfast or lunch, enjoying typical Italian delicacies (or take them away if you prefer). The Cappuccino made by Rosaria and Giacomina is one of the best in Florence! Highly recommended! -IL TAMARINO STAMPE D’ARTE (art print shop): this place is much more than a print shop. It is a proper gallery full of unique and original artworks, perfect place if you want to bring back home a special gift from the city of Florence. You can find both affordable items and truly sought-after pieces made in their workshop. They make prints using “acquaforte” (etching), an ancient printing technique presumably originated in Florence in the first half of the 16th century. Take home one of Piero’s prints and you will have a unique souvenir and memory of the city. -HUNTER VINTAGE FIRENZE and MY MOTHER IS A BIKER: These two Made in Italy clothing shops represent the innovative creativity of Florentine craftsman. Both shops, unique in their kind, are visited every day by people from all over the world. You cannot go back home without a fancy hat from Mattia’s boutique or a vintage jacket from Tommaso’s store!

The street, as well as hosting the Marino Marini Museum with the contemporary artworks of the artist-sculptor of the 20th century, is full of different kind of places. ICE CREAM WAS BORN IN FLORENCE! Not everyone knows that the birth of the milk-based or cream-based ice cream is quite recent: it born around 1565 in Florence, at the court of Caterina De' Medici, thanks to the architect Bernardo Buontalenti. The famous cream flavour that you can find only here in Florence, in fact, takes its name from the architect who invented it! WHERE TO ENJOY A GOOD ICE CREAM, MY ADVICES: -GELATERIA LA CARRAIA -GELATERIA EDOARDO -VIVOLI -VENCHI -GROM

PIAZZALE MICHELANGELO AND SAN MINIATO AL MONTE: From up there Florence looks like a postcard! You cannot leave Florence without having been on this wonderful panoramic terrace that allows you to have a breathtaking view of the city! The Piazzale, created by the architect Giuseppe Poggi in 1869, is dedicated to the great artist Michelangelo. If you need to reach the Piazzale by bus, I suggest you to take the line 12 or 13 that passes by the central station of Santa Maria Novella. The journey takes about half an hour). SAN MINIATO AL MONTE BASILICA: it is located few steps away from Piazzale Michelangelo, in an even higher place of the city. (San Miniato was the first martyr of the city)

THE UFFIZI GALLERY: The gallery is on the first and second floor of the large building constructed between 1560 and 1580 by Giorgio Vasari: it is (if not THE) one of the most FAMOUS MUSEUMS IN THE WORLD for its extraordinary collections of ancient sculptures and paintings from the Middle Ages to the Modern Ages. The collections of paintings of the 14th century and the Renaissance contain some absolute masterpieces of all times: it is enough to mention names like GIOTTO, BOTTICELLI, LEONARDO, RAFFAELLO, MICHELANGELO, CARAVAGGIO, SIMONE MARTINI, PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA, BEATO ANGELICO, FILIPPO LIPPI etc. and not less important in the panorama of the Italian art, the collection of statues and busts of the Medici Family.

Piazza della Signoria is the seat of civil power and the heart of the city’s social life. The square hosts the Loggia dei Lanzi (so called because here the Lanzichenecchi camped in 1527), which was used to host many official ceremonies of the Florentine Republic; here we can see many sculptures including marble lions, Perseus by Benvenuto Cellini, the Rape of the Sabine, Patroclus and Menelaus, Hercules, the centaur Nessus by Giambologna and much more. In the square you can see also the buildings of the Tribunale della Mercanzia, Uguccioni Palace, the equestrian statue of Cosimo I De Medici and the famous fountain of Neptune. PALAZZO VECCHIO is the heart of the civil power; it is a wonderful examples of 14th century civil architecture, surmounted by the majestic tower of Arnolfo. The palace today still houses several municipal offices (including the first citizen’s office) while the remaining rooms are used as museums open to the public, such as the splendid Salone del Cinquecento (Hall of the Five Hundred).

PORCELLINO FOUNTAIN: Few steps away from Signoria square, exactly in Piazza del Mercato Nuovo, you can see one of the most popular monuments in Florence: the bronze subject, which is actually a wild boar, is a Roman copy of a Hellenistic marble statue that Pope Pius IV gave to Cosimo I De Medici in 1560 during his visit to Rome. According to our popular tradition, touching the boar's nose will bring good luck! The complete procedure to obtain a good omen would be to put a coin in the animal’s mouth after rubbing its nose: if the coin falls beyond the grate it will bring good luck, otherwise, it won’t.

PONTE VECCHIO: It’s the ancient bridge that crosses the river Arno at its narrowest point. It is a national artistic heritage, one of the most famous bridges in the world and certainly one of the most beautiful! The bridge took the name "vecchio" (old) being the oldest Florentine bridge when the "nuovo" (new) Carraia bridge was built. It is the only bridge to have been spared by the retreating of the German troops in 1944 and to have survived the most disastrous events of all kinds, including the well-known flood of 1966. Ponte Vecchio, at first the bridge of butchers and vegetable sellers, is today dotted with the most beautiful jewelry stores and famous historic Florentine goldsmiths studios. The Vasari Corridor, built by Giorgio Vasari in 1565, passes over the goldsmiths' stores: it was commissioned by the Medici family to allow them to move secretly from Palazzo Vecchio to their summer residence, Palazzo Pitti.

Pitti Palace still bears the name of its first owner, the Florentine banker Luca Pitti who, in the middle of the 15th century, built the palace probably based on Brunelleschi’s design. It has been a grand-ducal palace and symbol of the consolidated power of the Medici family and it has seen the succession of three dynasties. Purchased in 1550 by Cosimo I de Medici and his wife Eleonora di Toledo, it passed to the Habsburg-Lorraine successors in 1737 and then to the Savoys who lived there as the royal family of Italy since 1865. It is currently home to 4 museums: the treasure of the Grand Dukes on the first floor, the Palatine Gallery and the Imperial and Royal Apartments on the main floor, the Gallery of Modern Art and the Museum of Fashion and Costume on the second floor.

It is a real huge open-air museum and there is a lot to see there, including ancient and Renaissance statues, caves, such as the one made by Buontalenti, fountains, such as the Neptune and Ocean or the terraced area where there is the Lemon House and the pavilion of Kaffeehaus and much more ...
THE ACCADEMIA GALLERY: The Gallery opens its door in 1784 when the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo reorganised the Academy of the Arts of Drawing (founded in 1563 by Cosimo I De Medici) into the modern Academy of Fine Arts. The decisive event in the history of the museum was the transfer of Michelangelo’s sculpture, David, to the gallery from Piazza della Signoria in 1873. The statue, symbol of Florence is still in the Gallery today together with a large collection of pictorial masterpieces, sculptures and musical instruments! DAVID, the supreme example of beauty, is more than 4 metres high and 6 tons in weight, Michelangelo took three years to finish it: from 1501 to 1504. (NOTE: the David you see in front of Palazzo Vecchio and in Piazzale Michelangelo are copies of the original one).

SANTA CROCE BASILICA: in the homonymous square, it is the largest Franciscan church in the world and a prestigious symbol of Florence. It was the place of the greatest artists, theologians, religious, men of letters, humanists and politicians who determined the identity of the city. The basilica is considered the Pantheon of the illustrious Italians: it holds countless graves including that of Michelangelo Buonarroti, Galileo Galilei, Ugo Foscolo and Gioacchino Rossi (remember: Dante Alighieri's tomb is in Ravenna, Emila Romagna, the city where he died in 1321).

DANTE'S HOUSE MUSEUM: Dante's House Museum is located in one of the oldest parts of the historical center of Florence, in Via Santa Margherita (the church of Santa Margherita de Cerchi is the place where Dante met Beatrice for the first time) and actually, it is not inside the original Alighieri's house but it incorporates other buildings, such as the Giuochi's tower (Giuochi's family were Dante's neighbours). The real houses of the Alighieri family were apparently on the right side of Castagna Tower but today there are no traces of their medieval appearance. Inside the museum you will experience multi sensory paths guided with the most advanced technologies, such as virtual tours, in order to learn more about the life and works of the great Florentine poet and father of the Italian language.

“DILADDARNO” or “OLTRARNO” zone (“on the other side of the Arno”) as Florentines say, is the whole area of Florence located on the left bank of the Arno River. BASILICA OF SANTO SPIRITO: in the homonymous square, it is one of the most suggestive points of Florence; it was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and has always been, since its establishment, ruled by the monks of Sant’Agostino order. Inside there are works of the most famous Florentine artists like the wooden crucifix of the young Michelangelo. The square is often the location of numerous events or fairs, first of all the famous antique and crafts market that takes place (usually) every second Sunday of the month, excluding the months of July and August.

Piazza San Lorenzo is an important place in the history of Florence: it is the headquarters of the Medici family who had here their house, church, cemetery and library! SAN LORENZO BASILICA: the only unfinished basilica, the oldest in Florence. It has been renovated several times since the sixteenth century by the Medici family. MEDICEAN CHAPELS: access is gained from the back of the basilica and it contains the private cemetery of the Medici family. Here, among others, you can find the Chapel of the Princes by Buontalenti and the New Sacristy done by Michelangelo. In the first one, particularly beautiful for the precious marbles and inlays that decorate the walls (on which you see the coats of arms of the Tuscan cities loyal to the family), is buried Cosimo I together with various relatives. The second one is commissioned to Michelangelo to host the tombs of Giuliano and Lorenzo De Medici. Here the artist, before leaving definitively Florence to move to Rome, completed some of his most beautiful sculptures: "The allegories of time", the portraits of the "Dukes", the "Madonna and Child" and the statues of Saints Cosma and Damian.

BARDINI VILLA AND GARDEN Do you remember the Calzedonia advert in which the actress Julia Roberts, after crossing Scottish landscapes and Paris, overlooks a wonderful panoramic view of the city of Florence? Here it is! This is exactly that fascinating location! The antique dealer Stefano Bardini, in 1913, bought the entire complex (building, garden and farmland) to realise his great project: create a museum, art galleries and a highly qualified restoration workshop. Recognised worldwide, the Bardini Garden soon became a point of reference for the most famous collectors. When Stefano Bardini died, his son, who had no heirs, decided to leave the entire complex to the city. Today it is a magical place, a museum of the cultural heritage of Florence, a place of art and culture that hosts events, exhibitions and works of great national and international artists. The villa is surrounded by a spectacular Italian garden where azaleas, camellias, roses, irises and hydrangeas culminate in the tunnel of wisteria that leads to the Kaffeehaus, a pergola that in April and May is coloured with wonderful purple flowers! So put on your comfortable shoes and go explore it!

EXHIBITIONS IN PALAZZO STROZZI The Strozzi, the great bankers of Florence, were always bitter enemies of the Medici family. In 1434 Cosimo il Vecchio banished all the males of the Strozzi family from Florence but in 1466 Filippo Strozzi's exile was revoked. On his return to his homeland, Filippo dedicated himself to the construction of his own residence, with the ambition of creating the "largest and most beautiful palace in Florence". Palazzo Strozzi represents the perfect example of the noble residences of the Renaissance reserved for family use. Acquired by the state in 1998, it was given in concession to the municipality of Florence to be used as a venue for cultural activities and exhibitions and since then it has been the main and largest exhibition space in Florence. The palace is only 5 minute walking from the apartment so, if you have time, let yourself be conquered by the temporary exhibition and go visit the palace!

Piazza San Marco, surrounded by elegant buildings is dominated by the facade of the Church and Convent of San Marco from which the square takes its name. In the middle of the square there is a small green area with trees and a bronze statue depicting General Manfredo Fanti (who died in Florence), made in 1873 by the sculptor Papi. The square was built in the first half of the 15th century, when Cosimo il Vecchio commissioned Michelozzo to build the church and the convent for the Silvestrini monks. The museum is located in the monumental part of the Dominican convent of San Marco, it is an architectural masterpiece commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici to Michelozzo and built between 1437 and 1443. Inside the museum you will be able to admire the largest collection in the world of the works of Beato Angelico, one of the greatest painters of the early Renaissance. The visit to the museum passes through the splendid spaces of the convent and in particular the cloister of Sant'Antonio, Sala dell'Ospizio, Sala del Refettorio, Sala del Capitolo and the monks’ cells. The beautiful Sala del Cenacolo is frescoed by Domenico Ghirlandaio with The Last Supper (1480). Via Camillo Cavour is one of the main streets of the northern part of the historical center of Florence. It leads to the Duomo and it is full of stores, but not only: at one point of the street, on the right side, you can see the place where the pharmacy of San Marco used to be (see picture). The pharmacy was once run by the Dominican friars, similar to Santa Maria Novella one.

From Piazza San Marco you will be in Piazza della Santissima Annunziata in just a minute: the long lodge you see in the square is the Spedale degli Innocenti, designed by Brunelleschi. It is the first orphanage in Europe: since 1445 rejected babies were abandoned here and still today the building houses facilities that take care of children without families. At the end of the lodge on the right side you can find the museum entrance. In the museum you can discover the history of the place and the stories of the children who have passed through the orphanage. First of all Agata Smeralda, the first newborn to be rescued on the 5th of February 1445. In the middle of the square you can see a bronze monument that Florentines often associated to a legend: the monument, dedicated to Ferdinando I De Medici, started by Giambologna and completed by his pupil Pietro Tacca, is famous especially for the bees that you can see on the side of the pedestal, facing the church. The queen bee symbolises the grand duke, while the swarm of industrious bees are the Florentines who are devoted to him. Legend says that counting all the bees without touching them is practically impossible and only those who succeed will be kissed by luck forever! And you? Are you going to try your luck?
