Traditional villages

A 20 minute drive away from La Casita del Mar is the traditional white Andalusian hillside village of Frigiliana. Renouned as the prettiest village in all of Andalusia, a trip to the village centre is a lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon. With artisan boutiques and gift stores selling handmade leather goods, local delicacies and sweet Malaga wine, Frigiliana is always a popular day trip for tourists and residents alike. Wear comfortable shoes as many of the winding streets are cobbled and uphill. Paid underground car parking is available just off the main roundabout or street parking where available. A visit to the Museo Arqueológico de Frigiliana is an easy way to spend an hour. Take the little open-air train which departs from the main roundabout area to see more of the village. Make sure your camera is well charged as there are lots of lovely photo opportunities in Frigiliana. Pack your sunscreen too, as it can get very hot!

Lanjarón is a municipality and town in the Alpujarras area, approximately 45 minutes drive inland from La Casita del mar. With its ruined castle and chalybeate baths, this spa town is famous for its bottled water company, the first ever established in Spain, whose products are sold throughout the country. On the 23rd of June, the town celebrates the annual fiesta of San Juan, known as the biggest water fight in Spain. On the night of the 23rd, people from far and wide come to celebrate the midnight madness. For one hour, starting at midnight until 1 am, the streets are packed with people and their buckets, water pistols, fire hoses and lorries filled with water.

Historic Monuments

The beautiful Al Hambra Palace and Fort complex located in th city of Granada - approx. a 1 hour drive away from La Casita del Mar - is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture and best-preserved palaces of the historic Islamic world. Built on the Sabika hill, an outcrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains a day out visiting the Al Hambra should not be missed. However, planning is key as it is a very popular tourist attraction and tickets are limited, so it is recommended to buy tickets beforehand online. Alhambra Granada Tickets and Official Tours: https://www.alhambra.org/en/ I would recommend driving to the 'Nevada Shopping' mall and using the free car park there, then catching a short taxi to the Albaycin area, where you can walk to the Alhambra or spend time in the winding streets bargaining for treasures with local vendors! The castle in La Herradura, built by order of Carlos III in 1770, is one of the best preserved examples of 18th century fortifications on the entire Andalusian coast. A visit takes about an hour, with the castle being open to the public both in the morning and in the afternoon. The Castillo de la Herradura is located 120 metres from the bay, yet remarkably it is only 8 metres above sea level, as due to the geography of the area at the time, it was not built on a hill. The Castillo was of great strategic importance to the area as it communicated with both of the bay's watchtowers on Punta de la Mona (Torre de los Berengueles) and Cerro Gordo (Torre de Cerro Gordo) to warn of approaching pirates and smugglers from up and down the coast. The current exposition “1562-La Furia del Mar” remembers the tragic shipwreck which occurred off the coast of La Herradura in 1562. Twenty five galleons of the Spanish Armada sank, in which more than 5,000 people lost their lives, a naval disaster greater than that of the Titanic., and gave the name to the local beach, Playa del Muertos.

Sightseeing

The Balcón de Europa, is well worth a visit during your stay at La Casita del Mar, as it offers stunning views across the Mediterranean sea, is in the centre of the old town of neighbouring Nerja. It's name is popularly believed to have been coined by King Alfonso XII, who visited the area in 1885 following a disastrous earthquake and was captivated by the scene. Local folklore says that he stood upon the site where the Balcón now stands, and said "This is the balcony of Europe". Local archive documents are said to show that it's name pre-dated this visit, but this has not prevented the authorities from placing a life-sized (and much photographed) statue of the king standing by the railing! The Balcón area was originally known as 'La Batería', a reference to the gun battery which existed there in a fortified tower. This emplacement and a similar tower nearby were destroyed during the Peninsular War. In May 1812, the British vessels Hyacinth, Termagant and Basilisk supported Spanish guerrillas on the coast of Granada, against the French. On 20 May, Termagant or Hyacinth opened fire and the forts were destroyed. Two rusty guns positioned at the end of the Balcón are reminders of these violent times. The huge lumps of rock, the remains of La Batería, visible in the sea at the end of the Balcón, are further evidence of this action. Nowadays its a lovely (and very popular) spot for holiday makers, locals and even brides and their grooms to stop and have their photo taken, which the beautiful coastline as a backdrop. With plenty of cafes and bars lining the winding, traditional streets leading to the Balcon, with gourmet ice cream, local honey, handmade artisan products and Spanish fans all for sale, you won't be short of things to enjoy during your visit to Nerja.
