The southernmost village on Texel is Den Hoorn. It can often already be seen from Den Helder. Den Hoorn is quietly situated, surrounded by nature. Are you coming to spend your vacation here? And, it is home to the most photographed object on Texel: the famous Reformed church. The white tower, which is beautifully lit in the evening, can be seen all the way from the ferry. In the spring, Den Hoorn is surrounded by colourful bulb fields. Beautiful right? Colourful bulb fields Exploring the local bulb fields by bike in the spring is a real must. From the village, you can also go for a lovely walk around the fields. But Den Hoorn has lots to offer in terms of art and culture too. Remarkable location of the church The village church is usually built in the center of a village. That was also the white church for Den Hoorn until many houses were closed due to vacancy. The village was never rebuilt around the church, but expanded further to the left of the church. This means that the white church now stands free in the landscape and is very photogenic with a beautiful Texel landscape around it. In the cobblestone path around the church are ten bronze scallops. These mark the beginning of the Jacobsweg Amstelredam, the starting point of one of the many pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.Den Hoorn is therefore the most northerly place with a church once dedicated to James in the former region of Holland. Texel theatre Did you know that Texel has its own theatre? Theater-restaurant De Toegift. Both famous and less famous artists regular perform here. And cabaret artists like Jochem Myjer have their try-outs at this theatre. The dinner-cabarets at Klif12 are a typical Texel must-do experience: a colourful mix of delicious food and hilarious entertainment. Den Hoorn boasts a wide range of great culinary options. Restaurant Bij Jef even has a Michelin star! Art & culture Do you like art? Den Hoorn is known as the artists’ village of Texel. It boasts several galleries with work by ‘old Texel masters’ such as Ad Blok van der Velden, but you can also find modern works of art here. Every year arround June, the village pulls out all the stops during Texel CultuurEiland culture month. Texel CultuurEiland and other events Many special events are organised in June. The Klifhanger exhibition, for instance: in and around the village, Texel artists create works of art that are in keeping with the location. Broadway, a festival where artists perform in the living rooms of the villagers, takes place every two years. And during Jazz on the Waves, you can enjoy high-quality music. In short: plenty to do! Accommodation in and around Den Hoorn Den Hoorn borders on National Park Duinen van Texel and the beach is nearby. So there is more than enough to see and do to warrant a longer stay!

Oudeschild is the only village on Texel that is located directly by the sea. In the harbour, low and high tides quietly do their own thing and you can watch it at your leisure! Several times a year the water rises so high that the quay overflows. But this no longer fazes the villagers of Oudeschild; what’s more, you can even take part in a High Tide dinner. A unique experience! Home port Oudeschild is the home port of the Texel fishing fleet and its robust charm gives it an irresistible appeal. Around the weekend, the harbour is bursting with modern cutters. Are you more interested in the past? From Oudeschild, you can go on a boat trip on the Wadden Sea and experience the illustrious Dutch East India Company history of the Texelse Reede at Museum Kaap Skil. Fishing The Texel fishing fleet still has about 30 cutters. These cause a lot of activity in the port. The fishermen are often ashore on weekends, mending nets and carrying out maintenance. In addition, you can of course eat delicious fish on the harbor. There are several restaurants that serve fish specialties. It doesn't get any fresher! The origin of Oudeschild The village of Oudeschild originated in the beginning of the 17th century. The ships of the Dutch East India Company, which were anchored in the Reede van Texel, brought trade and prosperity to the area. Small boats used to transport barrels of drinking water from the wells of the Brakestein country estate via Skilsloot to the waiting ships in the Reede van Texel. The Wezenputten These wells were situated just outside Oudeschild and were called the ‘Wezenputten’ (Orphans’ Wells) because they were owned by the orphanage in Den Burg. Of the original five wells, two have survived and have been given municipal monument status. Several cycle and walking routes pass by the Wezenputten. Reede van Texel Back in the day, dozens of ships were often anchored in the Reede van Texel, waiting for favourable winds so they could stand out to sea. Texel was the starting point for many voyages of discovery, military and trade journeys. During storms, ships lying off Oudeschild harbour sometimes became involved in accidents, such as the disaster on Christmas Eve in 1593. During a violent storm, a number of ships came adrift, dragging many others along. In total, almost 200 ships sank that night. Maria Tesselschade One of the shipowners who lost ships in this disaster, Roemer Visscher, named his daughter, who was born in 1594, after this disaster: Maria Tesselschade. Museum Kaap Skil At Museum Kaap Skil in the centre of Oudeschild, you learn about beachcombing and the maritime history of Texel in general and Oudeschild in particular. You step into old fishermen’s cottages, there are rope-making and fish-smoking demonstrations, and you find out all about the Reede van Texel, the illustrious Dutch East India Company and naval heroes like Michiel de Ruyter, who were once very much part of the Oudeschild scenery.

Many people think Oosterend is the most beautiful village on Texel. You too? You can only really experience that if you have been on the island yourself. There is a lot to see here. The imposing Maartenskerk is the striking centerpiece. Around it picturesque streets and alleys with beautiful old facades. Pleasant bustle Around the church are some shops, restaurants and a café that provide some lively activity in the village, which has approximately 1300 inhabitants. Oosterend is close to the Waddenzee. Close to the village are the neighborhoods Oost, Zevenhuizen and Nieuweschild. Fishing Traditionally, fishing has been an important source of income for the Oosterenders. There used to be a harbor near the Iron Cape on the Wadden side that was used for oyster and seaweed fishing. When it silted up in the 19th century, shipping moved to Oudeschild. Nevertheless, many cutter fishermen still live in Oosterend. In addition, agriculture also provides employment in this region. Tight village Oosterend has an active, close-knit village community. A large flea market is organized every other week in summer. Once every five years there is Oosterend Present, a large-scale party with performances and village games. There are two primary schools in the village, one public / Christian and one Reformed. The Timothy School is the only private reformational school in the Netherlands. Religion Oosterend was sometimes called the 'Jerusalem of the North' because of the presence of many churches and denominations. There were once seven churches in the village, nowadays three: the Maartenskerk, the Sint Martinuskerk and the church building of the Reformed Congregation in the Schoolstraat. Hiking trails Various walking routes have been set out in and around Oosterend. Highly recommended is the Historical Leitjesroute through the village. A slate has been placed on meaningful buildings and houses with information about the building itself and the former residents. The directions are available free of charge in various shops in the village. Would you rather go out into nature? Then the farmer's sum is a nice alternative. This green route to the old Waddendijk, along garden walls and grassland, was restored in 2008.

Situated in central Texel is the smallest village on the island: De Waal. A peaceful place with a friendly atmosphere. At Hogereind, there are several beautiful farms and houses that define the street scene. Small but perfectly formed The fact that De Waal is the smallest village on Texel doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth a visit. The village still exudes an atmosphere of days gone by. The special cottages and tranquillity are characteristic of De Waal. The best way to explore De Waal is on foot or by bike. That way, you have lots of time to take in the village’s charm. Step back in time In De Waal, you will find Museum Waelstee. This museum was founded by volunteers who wanted to preserve Texel’s agrarian history for future generations. These days, the exhibition focuses on all aspects of island life of about a century ago. At set times, there are demonstrations of old trades. Hotel Rebecca is well known for its fabulous cuisine. The brasserie of owner/chef Michel Arends has a Bib Gourmand, a Gault-Millau toque and is listed in the Top 500 of culinary magazine Lekker. Did you know that De Waal was once situated by the sea? Polder Waal en Burg De Waal is founded on boulder clay deposit from the ice age. Before this area was permanently reclaimed, the sea had free rein. Until 1613, the village, which currently has over 400 inhabitants, was situated by the sea. These days, polder Waal en Burg is largely owned by Natuurmonumenten. This organisation buys farmlands to turn them into nature reserves. Many meadow birds visit the area and in the winter, the shallow waters can often be skated on. Walking excursions in the area are possible. Sommeltjespop De Waal has a special relationship with Sommeltjes. These gnomes from Texel folklore are said to dance in the moonlight on Sommeltjesberg. This was once a burial mound near De Waal which was later levelled. Next to the church is a statue of the Sommeltjes and Texel’s most famous music festival is named after these creatures: SomPop. It is held in a meadow near the village and offers a stage to both famous and less famous bands.

Texel’s youngest village is De Cocksdorp, named after Antwerp shipowner N. J. de Cock. Together with other enterprising gentlemen and with the help of 1,500 labourers, he constructed an eleven-kilometre-long dike in just twenty weeks. Consequently, part of the mud-flat area was diked in. This area is now known as the Eierlandse polder. Do you want to go on holiday here? Then we have a lot of tips for you! Fun all around At one time, there was little to do in De Cocksdorp but these days it is a great meeting point for young and old. There are several big holiday parks in the area. Behind the dike lies the Waddenzee. And the symbol of Texel is situated nearby: the lighthouse! Symbol of the island The 150-plus-year-old lighthouse is almost 35 metres tall. These days, it serves as a museum with an interesting exhibition on the way up to the top, where magnificent Wadden views await you. You really want to make this climb! The sea area around De Cocksdorp A special place: the Wadden Sea and North Sea meet around the northern tip. This creates a dangerous current, so swimming is prohibited here. On the vast beach near the lighthouse, lots of people fly kites with multi-line kites and buggies. Seals regularly lie along the water’s edge. The Wadden area is on the UNESCO World Heritage list because of its exceptional natural beauty. So there is more than enough to see and do here. Rare bird species Bird watching is also excellent on this part of Texel. The northern dunes are challenging with lots of beautiful walking routes. It is home to many (rare) bird species. Unsurprisingly, there is a bird information centre in De Cocksdorp. Birdwatching excursions are regularly organised. Texel local Klaas de Jong, winner of television programme ‘Op zoek naar de Condor’ (In Search of the Condor) also takes bird lovers on birdwatching safaris. Or maybe you prefer checking out the neighbours’ pads during living-room festival Gluren bij de Buren? A trip to Vlieland on De Vriendschap A boat trip to the neighbouring island of Vlieland on De Vriendschap makes for a fun day out. On Vlieland, you can hire bikes and explore the island. But De Cocksdorp itself also offers fun activities, of course. Such as a visit to ice-cream farm Labora, just outside the village. What to do in De Cocksdorp? The village itself boasts a range of little shops, great restaurants and terraces, which you can discover at your leisure. And Durpermarkt market is held every Thursday in the summer.

De Muy nature reserve, a few kilometres north of De Koog, is a popular hiking destination. You’ll find steep-sided dunes, bushes, trees and former pastures which have now merged with nature. It is a beautiful and highly varied landscape, where you can stroll for hours. Spoonbills breed in the dune lake, de Muyplas. Other birds at De Muy include grey herons, cormorants, bluethroats, owls and nightingales. Wild plants are also abundant here. In the outer part of the reserve (‘Buitenmuy’), the rare bog pimpernel grows and in the dune meadows on the east side you’ll find a variety of orchids.

Perhaps Texel’s best-known nature reserve, De Slufter attracts a million visitors every year. It is a beautiful salt marsh landscape – part of the Texel Dunes National Park – which is flooded during north-westerly storms. It is the only area in the Netherlands where the sea can flood the land unimpeded. Only the southern part is accessible, the rest is a bird sanctuary. From the entrance (at the end of Slufterweg), a track takes you between sand dunes and winding saltwater creeks straight to the North Sea beach. All the plants that grow here are salt resistant, such as sea thrift and sea lavender, which colour the area a beautiful pink, lilac and purple in summer.

https://garnalenvissenoptexel.nl/en/tx10-tickets/ What will we be doing? TX20-Captain Herman will take you out for a fishing excursion on the Wadden Sea. Shortly after leaving the port in Oudeschild, we’ll cast out our nets What will we catch? We are fishing for shrimp. But many other animals will end up in the net as well. Crabs, starfish, gurnards, weevers, flatfish and maybe even a dogfish or two. What will we do with our unexpected catch? It will go into troughs on the deck. In one-of-a-kind, true Texel style, the captain will tell you all about the creatures caught that day. It’s a guaranteed good time! But also highly educational for young and old alike. Then, with the children’s help, we’ll return our by-catch to the sea. And the shrimp? They’ll go straight into a big cooking pot. The captain will show you how to peel them like a pro. Then you can taste a shrimp or two (or ten) for yourself. You’ve never had them this fresh! And if the weather’s less than perfect? We will set sail even if the weather is a bit foul. The windier the day, the greater the adventure. It’s Deadliest Catch, Texel-style! Only a severe storm can keep us at the dock. Rain? No problem! Pop on a raincoat and then warm up by the heater in the galley afterwards. Mist or drizzle? That’s when the wad mudflats are at their most beautiful (and peaceful). Will we see any seals? Maybe. There are no guarantees: these days, the sandbanks where the seals. tend to snooze are further from the coast. But recently our company has expanded with the “ANNA”. With this vessel we also do trips ( 1.5 hours ) to the seals. € 25.00 p.p. Inguire about the possibilities via 0031646201456 The “ANNA” is a ship of 15 meters long and 4.5 meters wide with covered interior space. (https://www.bootvarentexel.nl) How long is the trip? The Hors is a broad beach plain located at the southern tip of Texel. It is the most rugged part of the island. On the Hors, you can witness the formation of new dunes. You are allowed to wander wherever you want, with the exception of the area where the little terns nest during brooding season. In the second half of the 20th century, drift-dikes were constructed which cut off part of the beach from the sea. This is how the Horspolders and the Kreeftepolder were formed. These polders are wetlands which formed after the drift dikes were constructed. Unusual plants and animals grow and live here. The Hors, thanks to shifting sandbanks Up till 1700, the southern navigational route around Texel ran through the Spanjaardsgat (‘Spanish Channel’). This inlet was situated where the present Mok Bay now lies and flowed further into the North Sea. There was a sandbank lying west of the Spanjaardsgat: the Hors. This sandbank attached onto Texel in 1749. In the 20th century, the sandbank Onrust also attached to Hors. Thanks to the large supply of sand, new dunes formed and new dune slacks were created: the Geul in 1927, the Kelderhuispolder in 1930, the Horsmeertjes (lakes) in 1964 and the Kreeftepolder in 1980, both thanks to the wind-blown dikes. Since then, a series of natural dunes have formed on the Hors. Dune formation on the Hors Dune formation occurs when there is a large supply of sand. On Texel, this only takes place on the Hors. Sand couch is the first plant to take root along the wind-blown dikes as well as in the center of the empty plain. Isolated clumps of grass often disappear again during storms when the sand plain floods with seawater. However once they succeed to stay rooted, they catch sand and create mini-dunes. As long as there is a supply of sand, the dunes grow larger and larger. When the dunes are high enough to hold fresh rainwater, marram grass starts to grow. This grass is much better at catching sand, accelerating dune formation. Higher up on the Hors, you find many small young marram grass dunes. In between these dunes, reed and other marsh plants start growing as soon as the groundwater level is high enough. Plant growth in the Horsmeertjes and the Kreeftepolder The Horsmeertjes and the Kreeftepolder are young dune slacks with a special vegetation not found in many places in the Netherlands. The Horsmeertjes formed more than fifty years ago. The plant growth has changed over the years. More and more reed grows around the edges. Willows and other trees grow taller and the humus layer in the bottom is increasing. Nevertheless, unusual plants are still found here. Around the Horsmeertjes and Kreeftepolder, you find early marsh orchids, grass of Parnassus, fen orchids, marsh helleborine, chaffweed and brookweed. There are also a few plant species growing that show that the soil used to be salty. Seaside centaury is the most notable plant. Unusual mushrooms are also found here, including many species of waxy caps. In the Horsmeertjes, you even find lots of chara, which you only find in clean fresh waters. Birds found around the Horsmeertjes Many different species of birds can be observed in and around the Horsmeertjes. The open water attracts lots of ducks: common teals, wigeons, mallards, shovelers and common pochards. Mating goldeneyes are often observed on the lakes in February and March. Many crested grebes also nest in the Horsmeertjes, foraging for fish in the Mok Bay or in the Marsdiep. Elsewhere on the island, grebes are rare nesting birds. The collar of reed around the shores of both lakes hides reed warblers, bluethroats, reed buntings and sedge warblers. Rare birds such as bearded tits, marsh harriers and bitterns also nest here. Beach plants on the Hors Unusual plants which always grow close to the sea include sea holly, sea spurge, sea bindweed and rock samphire. You find all of these species on the Hors.

https://www.deeilander.nl/ Catamaran sailing school De Eilander can be found on the beach of Paal 33 on Texel. A perfect location to learn to sail. Why? Our sailing school is located on the Wadden Sea and has no surf in front of the door. As a result, the water is flatter and calmer than in the North Sea (where most sailing schools are) and we have much more suitable sailing days. Not only is the sea in front of the door great, the beach at Paal 33 is also fantastic! In the north of Texel, the beaches are cozier and quieter. From the terrace of our sailing school you have a beautiful view of neighboring island Vlieland and you can walk to the Texel lighthouse. De Schorren. Schorren is another word for salt marshes: higher parts at the foot of the Waddenzee dike. The salt marshes are usually dry – only during spring tides or storm surges the area is flooded. At 'normal' high tide, the water flows into the area via the creeks, but the higher parts remain dry. In 1982 a colony of spoonbills settled on De Schorren. In the spring about sixty to seventy pairs breed here. Dams have been built around the colony to protect the spoonbills from high water. Nevertheless, the birds themselves also take high tide into account: they build nests up to sixty centimeters high. The birds find food on the mudflats, where they mainly fish for shrimps. Spoonbills are not the only birds that have found an ideal breeding spot on De Schorren. The eider, various types of gulls, the sandwich tern and the oystercatcher also like to nest on the dried up mudflats. Like many ducks, sandpipers, curlews and black-tailed godwits, among others, they fish for the countless food that the mudflats are rich in, such as shrimp, piers and shellfish. Numerous birds rest on De Schorren after they have eaten their fill during their journey south or back. Because De Schorren is completely submerged during storm surges or spring tides, only plants that can withstand salt grow there. Sea lavender, sea aster, samphire and salt-melted for example. These plants are of great importance for the survival of the salt marshes – they even build them: the roots hold the silt from the sea. Because the waves cannot prevent the salt marshes from being knocked away during storm surges or spring tides, dams have been constructed. Binoculars In order to give the special plants and breeding birds as much rest as possible, De Schorren is not freely accessible to the public. The area is easy to oversee from the dike, although it is advisable to bring binoculars. If you would like to explore the area on foot, you can book an excursion and see the natural beauty up close.

With sightseeing tours of 45 minutes and 60 minutes we’re able to visit the enormous seal colonies between the islands of Vlieland and Terschelling. A breathtaking experience. In consultation with the pilot is’t usually possible to fly over where you’re staying on the island. During your 15, 30, 45 or 60 minute aerial sightseeing tour you’ll recognise routes that you’ve visited before and you’ll discover new places to visit when back on terra firma. The view from above literally gives you a whole new perspective. It’s an experience not to be missed. During your flight your pilot will point out the various highlights and will explain what you’re viewing from above. The iconic lighthouse, the various villages, the old harbour in Oudeschild, etc.
https://www.texelse.com/ De Texelse golf course is a left course, often compared to the traditional courses in Scotland and Ireland. It is one of the few dune courses in the Netherlands with a characteristic rough nature. The ever-present wind creates an extra difficulty factor, making the course unpredictable and thus particularly attractive. The special location on Wadden Island Texel makes De Texel golf course ideally suited for combining golfing with a weekend or holiday on Texel. For the golfer just starting out there is the Par 3, nine-hole practice course alongside the practice facilities. The golf clubhouse offers a magnificent view over the course and the dunes. With an excellent lunch menu, beautiful terrace and Texel hospitality it’s a great place to unwind.

https://www.ecomare.nl/en/ The seals are a definite must when you come to Texel. You can see them from very close by at the Ecomare seal sanctuary. And Ecomare has a lot more to offer, so much that you can spend a fun and interesting day out with the whole family. Seal sanctuary Not all seals that are found on the beach need help. In the case of howlers, the mother is often nearby and adult animals are sometimes just relaxing. Ecomare takes care of seals that would not make it on their own: young animals that have lost their mother and are not yet able to take care of themselves and animals that are weakened by disease. When they have recovered, they are released on the Texel beach or on a sandbank in the Wadden Sea. There are also permanent residents in Ecomare, for example old seals that are blind and therefore cannot be released. Sea aquarium Dive under water in the Sea Aquarium. Different habitats have been recreated in large, open marine aquariums. The Wadden Sea aquarium is home to young fish, crabs and starfish, while the large North Sea aquarium is where the large ones swim. You will see different types of sharks and rays, sea anemones, shellfish and lobsters; how much lives in our sea! Nature Museum In the museum of Ecomare you will find fascinating exhibitions about the mudflats, the sea and the animals that live there. Discover the magic of the mudflats in the new exhibition Wonderlijk Wad, follow the scientists in their research in Waddenstad and be amazed at the enormous size of a sperm whale and humpback whale in the Walviszaal.
