Where to eat...

Plymouth offers an eclectic array of restaurants and classic New England 'eateries' - covering the world (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Italian, French, Southern (US), and traditional New England (Lobstah!), and more.
Small place with small plates and wonderful cocktails: a short walk away in an area - should there be a wait - with many other restaurants, gastropubs and entertainment venues.

A lively bar and good food - Irish music on Monday nights and just a two-minute hoof from home (in fact you can probably see Dillons out the back of the house. Best to walk down Water to the roundabout, then west. Dillons is on your left just as North Park Street curves to the right.

Admit it, you're hankering for a bit of fried fish or lobster from a classic New England fish house. Lobster Hut is just that: order and take your ticket, grab a table, fill your little cup with malt vinegar or ketchup, get your own napkins and... wait for your number to be called. Classic.

You'll recognize the poets at their laptops, the regulars in the morning in a big circle, and the menu: muffins, scones, lattes and the like. A good place to kickstart a walk through downtown.

Unassuming.. easy to miss... out of the way. Good, we've gotten the excuses out of the way, the reasons so few locals have actually eaten at what may be the best Italian Restaurant in Plymouth (add that, in the recent past, North Plymouth was a bit sketchy). But Academy-award winning actor Chris Cooper and his wife, author-actress Marianne Leone Cooper, are big fans of their "truly Italian" cuisine, as are we, and nearly everyone we send their way for dishes like Peperone Rosso Imbottito, Risotto Con Polpa Di Granchio, Gamberetti Porcini e Mascarpone.. and other tongue-twisting, palate pleasers, agrees that TT is a diamond in the rough.

Not fancy at all but this newly opened restaurant has the best Thai food in the area— perhaps in the entire Commonwealth in our opinion.

Drinks & Nightlife

I wouldn't say Plymouth has a 'bar scene,' rather, gastropubs, microbreweries, distilleries and - sometimes just great bartenders - add a sophisticated element to the downtown, and beyond, in places such as...
Its a small plate restaurant with a raw bar, a great selection of beers, and in the back, The Cavern, with top-notch musical exacts. Try it early for food, mid-evening for drinks, late r for the music.

A true microbrewery with unique, hand-crafted beers that change regularly and are always tap-fresh: they're adding a second site with a full menu (opening 2020), but their original hole-in-the-wall (a converted garage on Howland Street downtown) has a special charm.

It's outside the downtown, but worth the drive. We call it "IndeFerm," and its the home base brew pub of one of the founders of Plymouth's craft beer scene, Paul Nixon. Enviros gather there on Friday nights, beer aficionados all the time. It's relaxed, intimate, friendly - if a bit small (though Paul is working on that, with an expected move to bigger digs coming) and often the site of community fundraisers. Paul has a hop farm, a saxophone, and a talent for all things fermented (try their Kombucha). Tell him we sent you!

Sightseeing

In Plymouth the sightseeing is twofold: history and environment. Very close to our home you'll find a number of historic sites, memorials, statues and such. Within and outside the downtown area you're in a rare ecosystem - the Atlantic Coastal Pine Barrens - which boasts unique topographical features, rare species, beautiful rugged beaches and - surprise - quiet hikes.
While the 'Rock' requires a bit of background knowledge to fully appreciate its significance, the Forefather's Monument is an open book - that will leave you with a long list of questions. But first, go (its never crowded because of its location, outside the downtown) and read the faces, the inscriptions, marvel at the intricate stone reliefs, or just walk slowly about it and wonder.

If you come to 'The Rock' with exaggerated but uninformed expectations, you will go away disappointed. But if you understand it's significance, to the Pilgrims, to their descendants, and to the story of America, you will be moved by its continued presence... Was this really the rock that the Pilgrims stepped on to that first, cold autumn day? I believe the answer is yes! Is the rock that you see all there is - well yes, and no: it is the original, but it has been mangled, moved, broken, chipped away by souvenir hunters and, actually, is just the remaining tip of a larger piece below the surface. A new part of the story are the days that it is now, underwater. Will it be a victim of climate change? It is literally a stone's throw away from the First Street, where the Pilgrims built their first homes that first winter, and watched as half of their brothers and sisters died in the effort...

It's 1627 forever, at Plimoth Plantation. The homes, industry and conversations of the costumed 'interpretors' are forever stuck in 1627, the year the Pilgrims contract with their English funders was finally over. You can walk there from our house in an hour, or bike in 15 minutes, or drive for 10 minutes to its entrance, and stroll the 17th century village, visit the Wampanoag campsite, and learn firsthand a little of what it was like to live in Plimoth (or Patuxet as the natives called it) 400 years ago.

The full preserve features an abandoned cranberry bog, hiking trails and a classic rock-strewn New England beach that is just a 90-second hike from the parking lot. Once there you'll likely find yourself alone with views of Cape Cod Bay, the outstretched arm of the Cape itself and, on a clear day, Provincetown. Recently the Pine Barrens Alliance assumed the lease at 158 Center Hill Road, where they are developing a conservation center (visitors welcome) with an emphasis on climate change, ocean protection, and a greater appreciation for the area's rare ecosystem - the Atlantic Coastal Pine Barrens.

If you're at The Rock, go south and enter Brewster Park, which marks the beginning of historic Town Brook. It is the same brook that gave life to the Pilgrims (fresh water, alewives (river herring) and fertilizer for their crops), then became the industrial center of New England when it was dammed for a variety of mills and then, just over a decade ago, was almost completely restored to its 17th century condition as dams were removed, the channel reconfigured, the alewives returned and a trail put together that will eventually allow visitors to walk from the waterfront to the heart of the Myles Standish State Forest. In 2020 Town Brook will be the center of festivities celebrating World Fish Migration Day.

Walk, don't drive...

If you are staying with us, or anywhere in the downtown area, leave the car at home or parked. Most of the historic sites are within a ten-minute walk, a few dozen restaurants as well.
Que faut-il apporter ?

Four seasons...

It can be pretty hot here in the summer, and there is a potential for a whole lot of snow in the winter, so be prepared. A good season-spanning raincoat that can double as a windbreaker is a good idea, as are durable walking shoes. There are beaches (a big one just outside the downtown, a few places to take a dip at both ends of the downtown) so pack a suit and flip flops in the summer.

A Whale of a Good Time

The Whale Watch Boats are so close to our Airbnb that the horns announcing their departure in the morning may roll you out of bed. If you're interested, book in advance to take advantage of discounts on whale watch cruises which almost always spot whales (or is it the whales that spot us?).

Public Transportation is available, but...

There is a "GATRA" bus that scoots about for a fee but I am not ready to call it reliable, at least in terms of a visitor wanting to get around town to specific places. Downtown there are pedicabs that are free (as far as I know) with the pedalers looking for tips. There are more and more Uber and Lyft cars available, and if you are coming in from Boston or beyond there is intermittent train service to Kingston and the Cordage Park (Plymouth) station, and regular bus service via the Plymouth Brockton bus lines which will drop you off at Exit 5 on the highway.

Public Bathrooms

There are a few public bathrooms in town, but they are not always open: one behind the 1749 Courthouse in Town Square, one attached to the south side of the new Town Hall on South Russell Street, one on Water Street where the Mayflower docks (its not there now) and, when the new Harbormaster building on the state pier opens next year it will have restrooms as well.

Speaking the 'language'

The Boston baseball team is called the 'sahks,' Former Patriot QB Tom Brady is 'the GOAT," a SPA is a convenience store, a frappe is an ice cream milkshake, Jimmies are chocolate sprinkles on ice cream, sprinkles are multi-colored sprinkles on anything, locals used to say 'wicked' before every adjective (wicked ugly, wicked cool..) but if you use 'wicked' in your conversation we'll know you're not from these 'pahts.'

What's the fuss about 2020?

2020 marked the 400th anniversary of the arrival Mayflower in Plymouth harbor: 400 years since Bradford, Brewster and friends began their noble experiment. It wasn't all good, of course, and fortunately the story of native peoples - specifically the Wampanoag - was supposed to be a large part of the commemoration. THEN COVID HAPPENED! But still, we’re 403 years old and looking forward to another 400, at least!

Insider Tours of Plymouth

TO BE DETERMINED... Along with our home, The Barrens, through Airbnb we used to also offer "Insider Tours of Plymouth" - a 2-3 hour 'experience' of the best of historic Plymouth (plus) that took advantage of Frank's experience as a reporter for the town's nearly 200-year old newspaper, the Old Colony Memorial. From Pilgrim Hall to The Rock, through Brewster Garden to Burial Hill and more. TOURS WERE CANCELED DUE TO COVID and we are just now considering whether to restart.
