The trail runs in parallel with the Warburton Rail Trail, however, the O’Shannassy Trail is set into the mountain ranges, and therefore provides a different perspective to the environment. Surrounded by tall trees, and ferns, the trail follows the historic open channelled O’Shannassy Aqueduct, and allows for spectacular views of the Yarra Valley. As the trail follows the Aqueduct, it means the track is on a gentle grade, so it is perfect for people of all levels of fitness. The easiest way to access the trail is from the Dee Road Carpark in Millgrove. This also provides a beautiful view of the valley. There are a number of opportunities to Step-On and Step-Off the trail, to allow for shorter walks.

The Falls themselves are serene and are best visited after a rainfall when the flow down the rocky slabs is highest, giving them maximum impact. At the top take a moment to contemplate the fact that this beautiful walk has been enchanting and delighting visitors since the 1880s, and it will continue to do so for a long time to come.

The Little Peninsula and Big Peninsula Tunnels are located on the Yarra River, about 14 km east of Warburton, 70 km from Melbourne, on the Upper Yarra Reservoir Rd there is a signposted turnoff to the Little Peninsula Tunnel Picnic Ground. There are picnic facilities at the car park. From there it's a short walk to the Little Peninsula Tunnel, which was created to alter the course of the river in the goldmining era so that the prospectors could scour the river bed. The Tunnel can also be reached from the upper car park, which is linked by a short track to the picnic ground. Another tunnel is at the Big Peninsula, about 1 km further east along the highway, and tracks lead down from the small car park, to either side of the Tunnel. A small picnic area is at the bottom of the stairway. The Goldfields Walking Trail starts nearby.
