Üsküdar - the heart of Istanbul

About

Staying in the historic district of Üsküdar (it is the centre of Istanbul!) let’s you enjoy local Turkish life away from the tourist areas - it is in fact one of the locals’ tourist hotspot coming to enjoy the vibes and long coastline :) It is also only one Marmaray underground stop and ferry stop away from the Sultanahmet old city area. The area also looks across to Asia to Europe (yes Istanbul is one of only five cities in the world that lie on two continents!), and also the sunset. Isn’t that cool ;)

A historic 18th-century Ottoman mosque and one of two main mosques that locals frequent - the imperial garden is so serene where you can sit for hours 😌

One of two mosques mainly frequented - this 16th-century mosque was commissioned by one of the daughters of the most powerful Ottoman sultans (guess who) and designed by the renowned architect Mimar Sinan.

Üsküdar’s coastline is one of my favourite parts of the district - long and uninterrupted, it is great for walks, running, fishing, watching the sunset and Europe coastline view, and just generally taking in the sea air and de-stressing.

Use public transport more than yellow taxis

Istanbul despite it’s crowded nature has a very efficient transport system and is the best way to get around. It saves you lots of money, let’s you experience local life and also relieves the headache and stress from taxi drivers :) who may take advantage of your lack of knowledge of the city. All you need to buy and top up is a İstanbulkart (the city's transportation card) which you can find at yellow card machines at most public transportation points.

Always go by the meter in yellow taxis

It is illegal for a taxi to negotiate a price - they have to go by the meter which they have to turn on at the beginning of a ride - this is the best way to avoid getting ripped off. Of course your driver could take a longer journey, but that’s when your navigation mobile application will help you to stay on course :)
