One mile from the house. This is a beautiful area for hiking and mountain biking. There are some covered tables for picnics and a paved bike trail too. There are a lot of trails and it's easy to get confused so make sure you remember where you parked, you can usually see the 51 freeway and Piestewa (the highest) Peak so stay oriented and you should not get lost. There are less people on this side of the peak than at Piestewa Peak. Free entry.

Believe it or not we do have beaches here in Arizona. This is a fun spot for a picnic and if it's warm for swimming. Bring an inner tube or a kayak and splash around while you take in amazing canyon views. Make sure you stop at a gas station before you hit the Apache Trail for a Tonto National Forest pass to park. This is a very popular mountain bike trail. You can also hike on it but it's known for MTB. From the house take 14th Street north to Hatcher then east on Hatcher to the trail that will connect you with Trail 100. It's about 10 miles out and back so you can go east until it ends at Shea then come back west to the end then back to where you started if you want a 20 mile ride or just go out and back either way for about 10 miles. Lots of rocks and exposure, some challenging climbs. Rated intermediate.

When most people think of AZ National Parks they think of the Grand Canyon. This monument is about the same distance from the house (3 hours). This is a lesser known monument but pretty amazing. It has hoodoos similar to Bryce Canyon in Utah. One of the best parts of this park though is that there are no crowds here since most people have not heard of it. Great for hiking and climbing rock formations. Super place for kids and seems safer than the barrier free areas of the Grand Canyon. Free entry.

This is my favorite museum in the world. It's not just instruments, it's anthropology, culture, history of the world through music. The exhibits are uniquely interactive throughout the exhibits of each continent. If you move closer to an exhibit, what is playing on the headphones changes to match what you are looking at and hearing. You need a few hours and it's not cheap but it's totally worth it. Should be called Museum of Ethnomusicology not "Instrument."
