So much more than a coffee shop, named for the famous Italian cyclist, these guys run cycling groups, fitness groups and a swimming club. Perched on the edge of the beach behind the harbour walls there's the lovely promenade outside to sit with your take-out, or plenty of space inside on a variety of comfy chairs. The home-made cakes are amazing, and huge! And they're conveniently located at the end of the sea-front walk from Whitburn to Roker, so you can refuel here for the walk back!

Being part of the hotel they are open for breakfast from 6am (weekdays) and 7am at weekends with the usual, but still delicious variety on offer. Sunday Dinner is a reasonable Two Courses for just under £12, or an extra £2 to make it Three!

The Cast Iron Bar and Grill and Sunderland Marriott hotel is a good place to head to for a nicer meal. As it's name suggests it's pretty 'steak' focused, but has a decent selection of other dishes including fish, pasta and salads. The vegetarian selection isn't huge, but there are a few things to choose from. The restaurant itself is smart, so nice for a celebratory meal!

One of several 'cheap and cheerful' Italian restaurants in the area. All of them serve delicious traditional pizzas, pastas and 'al forno' selections. Usual happy-hour offers can be had for under £10 during the week. If you can't get into Gabriele's, Santini's next door is also great!

Aiming for a more 'up market' feel, the Salt House Kitchen serves an interesting and frequently-changing menu, with sea-food playing a big role. Think Sea Reared Trout with Curried Mussels, or Steak with Beetroot-infused Octopus. A three course meal is likely to be around £35-£40 per head, excluding drinks.

Our FAVOURITE Indian restaurant! The Shagorika isn't huge, so it might be best to book for a table at the weekend. The staff are really friendly, and they'll help you pick out something new to try. If you can't get in here, Goa restaurant upstairs is also good and is a little larger.

Flying the flag for Asian cuisine, the Fat Buddha is a popular bar and restaurant in the area. It overlooks the beach to the east, so is best enjoyed in Summer months, or in the afternoon. Another good venue for a celebration; it's open late and has a fairly up-beat atmosphere. The cocktails are definitely worth a try - the lychee martini is especially tasty! Service can be inconsistent, and be prepared to get your elbows out if you're out for a few drinks on a Bank Holiday!

Latimers is an amazing seafood deli with cafe attached. Their cooked breakfasts are delicious, which you can enjoy from 8.30am, every day (except Monday). As you might expect, their menu is very seafood focused, and you can get everything from 'naked' fish and chips to oysters and champagne. If you want to cook at home, their seafood selection is extensive and fresh daily, and they'll give you advice on how to cook your choice. If the weather allows, their south-facing terrace is very nice to enjoy a coffee overlooking the sea.

The only proper restaurant in Whitburn Village, Mamma Mia is a pleasant Italian restaurant, serving a range of traditional dishes with daily/weekly specials. If they're trying out something new you're likely to get a little taster while you wait for your starters, and if it's your birthday expect a sparkler and a serenade!

Bistro Romano is our go-to restaurant for a special occasion. Or sometimes when we just want a really good steak! It's very well regarded in the area, and has been known to serve some local famous faces. We've pretty much tried all the dishes, and they're all delicious, but our favourite picks (when available) include: Fillet steak with haggis, chicken and chorizo risotto, and porcini mushroom and asparagus tagliatelle. Dessert has to be one of their ice-cream or sorbet selections. Although they don't have a bar to speak of, their selection of gins, vodkas, whisky is amazing, but dwarfed by their grappa collection. A meal for two with wine is likely to come in around £100 - £150

Predominantly serving ice cream and desserts, Tutti Frutti has a '50s american diner theme, so you can also get a burger or hot-dog there too. Always a winner with kids, and grown-ups with a sweet tooth! ;)

Beautiful bistro/wine bar in nearby East Boldon (approx 2 miles from house) with delicious brunch, lunch and evening menus. Booking almost always essential and they have a lovely outdoor terrace for summer. They’ve recently opened a separate deli down the road where you can stock up on cheese, fresh bread, charcuterie, wine and all the accompaniments.

The Promenade is a great, friendly local pub, just over a mile from Whitburn with a snug dog-friendly area and beer gardens to the front and back. It’s the perfect distance for a leisurely stroll for a pint and the food is good pub grub with huge portions.

Friendly, old school village local with a decent range of draft beers and lagers, dining room for Sunday dinners and outdoor seating. Dog friendly too so you can bring your pooch for a pint as well! Stop in for a drink before heading upstairs for a tasty italian in Mamma Mia. Owners Vic and Charlie always make new visitors feel welcome!
