Food Scene

Slightly off the beaten track of Church Street, find a Kurdish cafe with awesome, ever-changing mezze platers. The Kurdish burger is also not to be missed — it’s actually a seeded bagel stuffed with sliced sujuk (a hot, dried spiced sausage) avocado, halloumi and mozzarella. Some might quibble with its Kurdish authencity; more importantly, it might just be the perfect breakfast burger. Get a side of the house fries, and become part of the enlightened group that knows that pomegranate is the perfect accompaniment to chips.

The area’s second food focussed gastropub, it offers classic British fare with a Mediterranean accent. The setting is stylish, and the menu steady — changing monthly — on chicken caesar, hake with tomato vinaigrette, and a dry-aged picanha. There’s a large format pie and a leg of lamb: approachable eating. And plenty of crispy, rustling chips.

Here’s a bold claim: this is a multi-level Turkish restaurant that can compete with (and probably beat) any mangal in Dalston and Green Lanes, if coming in at a slightly higher price. With a huge coal fired grill on the centre, it’s a traditional menu that covers all of the classics: blackened adana kofte, punchy salads, tender chicken shish and pillowy breads.

Camberwell is stuck in a doughy middle: Brixton to its left, and Peckham to its right both have a crazy number of “sourdough” and “wood-fired” pizza places. Theo’s beats them all; which is why it’s one of the few places in Camberwell (along with Silk Road) that command a wait for a table at the weekend. It will be well worth the queue — especially for the Camberwell scotch bonnet ‘nduja or the wood oven aubergine.

Middle eastern quick eats. Halloumi and falafel wraps, perfectly seasoned chicken shawarma and smoothies at super prices, it’s the perfect spot for a quick brunch or lunch. The jacket potatoes are also surprisingly good. The local lunchtime place every neighbourhood wishes it had.

Drinks & Nightlife

This institution’s menu of modern gastropub / fine dining earned it a place on the Michelin pub guide; it also earned a place in The Guardian’s 50 best Sunday lunches 2017. The food has long been headed up by Michael Davies, who originally did the food at Frank’s, the place that first put south east London on the map as a go to drinking/dinning destination. Frank’s and now Davies now partner to run the pub, and their dedication to quality ingredients, making things from scratch, and eclectic, modern British worldview combine for one of the most appetising menus out there: house-cured coppa; bream, peas and house lardo; squid, coco beans, tahini, and datterini tomatoes.

The Tiger is a welcome addition the Camberwell neighbourhood which currently suffers from a lack of late-night venues. Live DJs take to the decks every Friday night until 3.30am, so you can stay out late in SE5. Hurrah! The interior of the Victorian building is a combination of vintage furniture, dark wood and ubiquitous stag heads. Head there on a Sunday evening for live jazz and blues acts or take part in the 'not another pub quiz' night, every other Tuesday.

Beards and craft beer have become a fashionable pairing of late and this pub nearly always has both. With a strong focus on craft beer and ale, the Stormbird currently boasts 13 draught beers and a huge selection of bottled craft brews. The Stormbird doesn't actually serve food, which these days — when every old boozer has morphed into a gastro-pub — is quite a welcome change. To sample the full range of beers without getting completely inebriated, try the 'beer bat'; three small glasses which add up to just one pint in total volume, served in specially-made wooden trays.
