Sightseeing

The charming village of Cascais was once a retreat for exiled european royal families. Along the beautiful 30-min train ride from Cais do Sodré station you'll see several beaches, try Estoril or Cascais, both next to the namesake train stations. These two beaches are connected by a pedestrian walk along the sea. Arriving in Cascais, try catching the "Buscas" bus just in front of the station for a ride till Casa da Guia. It is a restaurant area set around a picturesque summer house, where you can have lunch enjoying stunning sea views. From there, walk back down to the village along the seaside road. As these are very popular spots, if possible try to go there on weekdays.

A magical place just 30 km from Lisbon, with plenty of interesting spots to visit. Get there by train from Rossio train station (30/40 minutes ride) and then walk to the village center and wander around the cobbled streets. Among many places worth a visit are Palácio da Pena, a prince's fantasy surrounded by a wonderful park, and esoterical Palácio da Regaleira. As these are very popular spots, try to go there on weekdays, if possible. To get information on local buses to move around, you may want to download the app "Scotturb Travel Guide".

Terreiro do Paço sits right at the place where, hundred of years ago, merchants from all over the world disembarked their goods to be traded throughout Europe. Its unique setting, with one full side opening to the sea, still reminds of its time as the "Old World"'s entrance hall. Now it is a light-filled pedestrian square, hosting all kinds of amusements (even a disco club). From there you can walk on a sideway along the river stretching to Cais do Sodré.

Castelo de S. Jorge it's an unmissable place to get the feel of Lisbon history. If you have the time, walk your way up to the Castle, instead of taking a bus or the tram (walk slowly and it won't be very tiring). Follow the tram route and along the way stop at Sé Catedral (Lisbon's cathedral), Sta. Luzia's belvedere and Portas do Sol. Inside the Castle take a tour of the whole site, and visit the Permanent Exhibition and the Black Chamber to know more about Lisbon's rich and millennial history.
