Food Scene

The Coffee Cup is a Hampstead institution and the oldest coffee house in London. It’s the perfect place to 'people watch' and lose track of time over (several) cappuccinos. The food is nothing to write home about, but it’s a good spot for a quick bite.

One of the best Japanese in London, serving great sushi plates and moorish yakitori skewers. You definitely need to book in advance though, it is only a small place and gets ridiculously busy. I'd recommend a table upstairs, so you're in the hustle and bustle, but downstairs is more quiet.

This is a local treasure and the restaurant has been going since 1969. The food is delicious, portions are generous and the staff are highly attentive. This is old school hospitality. I'd suggest booking in advance as it can get busy, for good reason!

If you like dogs, head to the Wells Tavern after a strapping walk on Hampstead Heath. There you can pet dogs until your heart’s content, while sipping on an ice cold beer and tucking into their lamb burger, is excellent!

The Hollybush is yet another historic Hampstead pub, tucked away behind the highstreet. It’s a cosy place, especially in winter, as they have log fires to thaw in front of. The food is excellent, and there is a very decent wine/ beer selection. Definitely worth a visit.

Arts & Culture

Burgh House is a Queen Anne, Grade I listed building with a pretty garden and buttery serving traditional cream teas. On the first floor of the house, you'll find the Hampstead Museum and if you're in luck you might catch an inspiring talk or classical music performance. Regular concerts, recitals and talks are held, as well as art exhibitions.

Kenwood House is seeped in history and boasts a world-class Art collection including The Guitar Player by Johannes Vermeer and a Rembrandt self-portrait. The House is in a beautiful location, with stunning views and is a choice picnic spot, where you can easily spend an afternoon.

Shopping

This is one of the most delightful shops in Hampstead, and a ‘must’ if you’re green fingered. There’s a lovely selection of plants and pots, which make the perfect gift... for yourself, as well as others! It’s also an independent shop, so you can feel good about supporting a local business.

Essentials

Not exactly the place for everyday shopping (it is expensive) and you certainly should not set foot inside if you're vegetarian, but their meat is very high quality. You can also find cheeky treats tucked away, from well known American brands to home-made Dutch bitterballen. Ask the butcher for a secret batch!

This is the best local supermarket (when staying at our place in Hampstead). It's quite large and stocks everything you might need during your stay, including some great wines as well as daily essentials. Personally I would not bother with the Tesco Express by Hampstead tube, the choice is not great and the staff are miserable. M&S staff are friendly, the range is excellent and it is well worth the few extra pounds!

Sightseeing

Catch the No24 from South End Green bus depot and it will take you straight into central London, passing through Camden Market. This is a great (and cheap) way of seeing London - from the top deck of a double decker of course! Buy an Oyster Card and hop on and off to your heart's content.

Parks & Nature

No trip to Hampstead would be complete without a walk on the Heath. The park is unique to London as it is semi-wild and it really does feel as though you are out in the countryside. The Heath is beautiful all year round, from muddy walks in the bracing cold to the festival atmosphere of the summer, as crowds gather at the Ponds.
