Food Scene

Carter Donnell used to work in New York's East Village at the acclaimed 9th Street Espresso café and he's now brought his coffee know-how with him to London. He began with a few square feet of space in a corner of Kinko Cycles shop in Soho's Golden Square and has now branched out to this larger, pared back venue on Church Street. Order a flat white, the most popular drink here, made with precision and flair.

This café cum-second-hand furniture shop has a daily changing menu of simple, freshly-made food with an emphasis on local and home-made produce. The idea is that the café works as an interactive showroom for the second hand furniture and design on offer. So if you like the chair you're sitting on — buy it.

With its mis-matched furniture, sack-cloth covered ceiling and an array of art on display — Maloko is a cosy, relaxed café. The owner, Cameroonian Francklin Eavagle, has one eye on the growing number of artists residing in Camberwell and envisions a 'community driven' crêperie where the local burgeoning creative community can meet, hold exhibitions and music events. He specialises in vegan-friendly, gluten-free galettes — made from buckwheat — as well as traditional crêpes.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Tiger is a welcome addition the Camberwell neighbourhood which currently suffers from a lack of late-night venues. Live DJs take to the decks every Friday night until 3.30am, so you can stay out late in SE5. Hurrah! The interior of the Victorian building is a combination of vintage furniture, dark wood and ubiquitous stag heads. Head there on a Sunday evening for live jazz and blues acts or take part in the 'not another pub quiz' night, every other Tuesday.

Beards and craft beer have become a fashionable pairing of late and this pub nearly always has both. With a strong focus on craft beer and ale, the Stormbird currently boasts 13 draught beers and a huge selection of bottled craft brews. The Stormbird doesn't actually serve food, which these days — when every old boozer has morphed into a gastro-pub — is quite a welcome change. To sample the full range of beers without getting completely inebriated, try the 'beer bat'; three small glasses which add up to just one pint in total volume, served in specially-made wooden trays.

This comfortable-as-an-old-shoe gastropub, brought to you by the team behind Anchor & Hope in Waterloo and the Canton Arms in Stockwell, with Mike Davies at the helm in an open kitchen, exemplifies and lays out for our delectation everything positive — to my mind anyway — that has been happening in restaurants recently.
