Ski Apache is only 13 miles. Of course that’s up the mountain so it takes about 20 to 30 minutes. The town does a great job clearing the roads and ski apache is usually always open unless weather is very bad.
If you are not skiing I would still recommend driving up to Ski Apache and take the tram to the top. It’s very beautiful! -There are zip lines at ski apache although I don’t believe they are operational during the winter months.

Inn of the mountain gods is the best casino in town with live shows and large casino area. This one also has a very nice lake for hiking and fishing.

If you really have time you can take a 3 hour drive to Santa Fe, enjoy some sightseeing for most of the day and head back home later in the evening. If you do go there I recommend Tomasitas for great southwestern style Mexican food and fantastic margaritas. Santa Fe Forest is also very beautiful and has several hiking trails.

Parks & Nature
Alto lake is nearby where you can go and walk around or even fish and this year(2017) they added a 2 mile hiking trail which is very beautiful. I highly recommend this hike.

Grindstone Lake is also another place to go fishing and hiking. They usually stock the lake with plenty of fish. Or you can go horseback riding at Grindstone Stables

Although a bit of a drive, during the summer months if you are looking for a place to swim take a 2.5 hour drive to Truth or Consequences where you can fish, boat and swim at Elephant Butte Lake.

Ruidoso town center located around 4 miles from the house. There is always plenty of parking and just a great place to go walking, shopping and dining.

Sightseeing
I recommend a drive to Cloudcroft which is about 45 minutes away. Just a nice mountain town elevation of 9k so it is usually about 10 degrees colder and they have several kid friendly places to go sledding and even ice skating. There are plenty of hiking trails there as well.

After your trip to Cloudcroft or on a separate trip, drive down to white sands which is beautiful anytime of the year. If you are coming from Cloudcroft stop by the Old Apple Barn which is a cool spot where you can buy homemade pies, apple cider and more and sit on the patio to enjoy the views or people watch. :)
