Food Scene

The restaurant serves great food and the staff are really friendly. There are lovely open fires to sit by in the bar on a cold winters night.

There is a really good cafe in the garden centre. It is great for jacket potatoes, homemade soups, salads and really great cakes! Wonderful homemade ginger beer as well. Good value.

Sightseeing

Edinburgh has a thriving art and culture scene as well as plenty of amazing restaurants and bars. We love to spend a week at Shiel when the Edinburgh festival is on and spend a few days seeing as many shows as possible followed by some R&R at the house!

Pretty little castle with a hearty walk into the hills behind it (if you are adventurous, you can start walking behind the castle and 2 hours later find yourself coming out near Tormaukin Pub & Restaurant for lunch!)

Arts & Culture

There is a fantastic theatre in Pitlochry (a lovely village in the middle of nowhere!). During the summer especially, there are some fantastic touring shows there so check their website for what's on and book if you fancy a show: https://pitlochryfestivaltheatre.com When it was built, everyone thought it was mad to create a theatre in such a far away place but people come from all over Scotland to see the shows there. There is a restaurant too so you can make a night of it!

Drinks & Nightlife

This is by no means a fancy pub! It is basic but if you fancy a dipping into a bit of the local scene, The Inn is a good option. There is also The Inn in Crook Of Devon (which is walkable to) but this is rarely recommended in the tourist guides as it is very 'local' (which for some is fun!)

Parks & Nature

Within easy walking from Shiel is the Rumbling Bridge river walk. Walk down to Rumbling Bridge itself (on A823) and you will see a little gate to the right on the far side of the bridge. This leads you on to the river walk with various paths down to inspect the dramatic river and gorge. It is called 'Rumbling Bridge' because the power of the water is often so strong that it knocks large rocks together deep down in the gorge near the bridge creating a rumbling sound. If it has been raining recently when you are staying with us you may well hear the rumble! If you keep progressing along the walk you will cross over the river and eventually come out near the Crook Of Devon.

Essentials

This is good for the 'big shop' - is quite a large Sainsbury's so good for stocking up the fridges!

The local village shop is in Crook Of Devon - just 5 mins drive (or 25 mins walk). Good for bread, milk and the paper but not open all hours or days so be ready to head further to Kinross if it is closed

Entertainment & Activities

Our most local of the various golf courses around Shiel (just 10 mins drive) but one our our favourite courses! There are 27 holes and set in the most beautiful Scottish hills. It is technically a members only club but if you call them up and beg, they often do let guests play! Be nice and good luck - you will need to wear the proper golf attire. Not a bad club house for lunch too...

Gleneagles should not need introduction - is one of the World's most famous golf clubs but also an incredible spa and as you would expect, fine restaurants and so on. So if it is raining and you don't mind spending a few pounds, then perhaps a spa day and some fine dining at Gleneagles? Or if you book and fancy some high end golf, there are few better courses in the world!

The 'home of golf'. Yes, golf was invented here and with the strong North Sea winds and thick rough (often 2 foot heather!), is still one of the most challenging courses in the world. If you have a low handicap and book in advance, this is a great place to play whilst in Scotland...
