Sightseeing

Yes, they’re as clichéd as clogs, but Tulips are a definitive symbol of Dutch culture, and a trip to the Netherlands wouldn’t be complete without feasting your eyes on these beautiful blooms. The most famous place to buy tulips and bulbs in Amsterdam is at the Bloemenmarkt (just around the corner!) – the world’s only floating flower market which lines the Singel with colourful flower stalls.

Situated on Museumplein, where it first opened in 1895, Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum is the largest Dutch museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art and design. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is one of the most popular museums in the world, attracting visitors from every corner of the globe. Naturally, this is in large part due to it housing the largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh – more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings and 700 of his letters. Having originally opened on Museumplein in 1973, the Van Gogh Museum has been expanded and modernised over the years, ensuring it's a truly cutting-edge exhibition and visitor space.

Anne Frank is one of Amsterdam’s most well known former residents. The Anne Frank House at Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam is where she lived in hiding with her family for more than two years during World War II. Now converted into a museum it contains a sobering exhibition about the persecution of the Jews during the war, as well as discrimination in general.

A visit to the Museum of the Canals (Het Grachtenhuis) is the perfect way to learn more about the history of Amsterdam’s Canal Ring. The museum looks at the 17th-century city expansion projects that led to Amsterdam’s ring of canals which received UNESCO world heritage status in 2010. After seeing the interactive displays, you’ll look at Amsterdam in a whole new light when wandering through the city’s streets or taking a canal cruise.

Right at the middle Rembrandtplein (house number 24) you will find Bar Schiller. The bar is located on the right side of the hotel (please note that you enter the bar and not the restaurant which is part of the hotel!). Bar Schiller is one of the few original bars visited by Amsterdammers and still undiscovered by many visitors from outside the city. The period interior boasts original art deco lamps, wallpaper and furniture. Enjoy a good glass of wine in the bar or fine French food like soupe de poisson, steak tartare and confit de canard in the restaurant.

Café de Jaren owes its popularity to the quality of the food and drink it serves, the salad buffet, the reading table, the canal-side terrace and balcony, the variety of tucked-away places to sit, and the light and spacious atmosphere. And last but not least, the hospitality. The two floors of the café are joined by an atrium.
