Whakapapa skifield is on the northern slope of Mt Ruapehu, and has an abundance of ski chalets on the slopes and a new gondola that runs winter and summer up to the restaurant on the volcano. this is worth the trip for sightseeing and skiing.
NZ's largest ski area and open to explore in summer, too. A short walk from the base area is the Meads Wall with impressive views of Mt Ngauruhoe, where several scenes from LOTR were filmed.
Turoa Skifield on the South side of Mt Ruapehu has excellent terrain for boarding and skiing. 17km through a corridor of orginal podocarp forest get you to the resort. Great days, great terrain.
