In this house, Berry Gordy’s “hit factory” churned out a nation’s new sound. When I would pass by as a kid, I’d sneak a look at the long Cadillacs and Eldorados and stare wide-eyed at the sharp-dressed singers who hung out on the stairs. Now, it’s the Motown Museum, and fans from around the world come to see where the music began. Get advanced tickets for a tour. You’ll hear stories about Gordy, Smokey, Diana and the Temptations. The piano is silent, but resonant with a generation of hits. It feels like an artist might step out of the studio and onto the front stoop again, just like when I saw them as a child.
