The beautiful Elk River Falls is just 15 miles from Sugar Mountain in the Pisgah National Forest. It’s a short-but-steep walk down to the pool below the 50-foot waterfall that funnels through a rock cliff. While you will see “Elk River Falls” directional signs from the small town of Elk Park, you will see the name “Big Falls” at the trailhead.

A short drive from Sugar Mountain, the Elk River falls are easily accessed via a short hike. A great swimming hole with a few kid-friendly areas as well.

Elk River Falls is one of the most stunning swimming holes and waterfalls in the area. The trail features a 50-foot waterfall that's nothing short of spectacular. You'll also discover an oval swimming hole that's one of the most popular in Pisgah National Forest. Flat rocks make it easy to catch some sup or have a picnic. Note: DO NOT JUMP FROM THE TOP OF THE FALLS. Boulders are hidden below the surface.
