The prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri is considered among the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. The excavations at Akrotiri have uncovered one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean. The first habitation at the site dates from the Late Neolithic times (at least the 4th millennium BC). The large extent of the settlement (ca. 20 hectares), the elaborate drainage system, the sophisticated multi-storeyed buildings with the magnificent wall-paintings, furniture and vessels, show its great development and prosperity. Evidence of habitation at Akrotiri first came to light in the second half of the 19th century. However, systematic excavations were begun much later, in 1967, by Professor Spyridon Marinatos under the auspices of the Archaeological Society at Athens. He decided to excavate at Akrotiri in the hope of verifying an old theory of his, published in the 1930’s, that the eruption of the Thira volcano was responsible for the collapse of the Minoan civilization. Since his death in 1974, the excavations have been continued under the successful direction of Professor Christos Doumas.

The Bronze Age settlement of Akrotiri was one of the most important Minoan urban centres and ports in the Aegean sea when it was covered by volcanic ash in the 17th century BC. Today the site is covered by a bioclimatic roof and walkways are suspended above the archeological remains , that allows visitors to walk among the two and three-storey buildings.

Located next to the famous Red Beach, the village of Akrotiri is amphitheatrically built in the southeastern part of the island. Originally a Minoan settlement, the ancient city of Akrotiri, destroyed by a volcanic eruption, is the most important archeological site in Santorini. The modern town, with its picturesque alleys, blue-domed churches and traditional houses, is home to many restaurants and tavernas and it is definitely a great stop to have dinner after watching the sunset at the lighthouse.

In the south of the island lies the ancient city of Akrotiri. It is one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean, whose remains have been well preserved after being buried under tonnes of volcanic ash for more than 3500 years. For many it is known as the Pompeii of the Cyclades, which also gave rise to the legend of the lost continent of Atlantis.
