Witness an ancient life cycle of the animal kingdom, as majestic sea turtles make their journey to the shore to lay their eggs. Delight at the sight of their young, hatching weeks later, and making their perilous journey to the sea. Mon Repos is special! It supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland and has the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific region. The success of nesting and hatching turtles at Mon Repos is critical for the survival of the endangered loggerhead turtle. At this globally-significant site you can learn all about these extraordinary animals and the conservation and research programs that are protecting them at the turtle centre, and have an amazing turtle encounter.

Hundreds of turtles come back to the site where they were born to lay their eggs. Many of them come to Mon Repos where rangers take you onto the beach to enjoy two experiences. The mothers come three times each season and lay up to 150 eggs each time. These tours are available from November to January each year. You will see nearly all the eggs falling into a pit that the mother has dug, and you may be asked to help carry the eggs further up the beach if they are laid below the high tide water line. Then, from January to March each year, the youngsters push up through the sand and struggle down to the water to commence the plan for their life. There is a possibility that you may be able to hold them, but only for a few moments. In any event, you will see them arise from the sand, and follow their journey down to the water.
