Woodstock was not much of anything until a group of 19th century bohemians came in and founded the artists colony Byrdcliffe. Many of the Byrdcliffe buildings are still active; there are sometimes performances in the theater. There are also good hiking trails behind the main house.

It is the oldest arts colony in America and helped start the Woodstock Ethos of Independence and Creativity.
