This retreat center (75 min drive away) offers multiple trails open to the public for day hiking. Chimney Rock & Kitchen Mesa are both more strenuous climbs and yet very, very worth it for the views once on top of the mesas. There are shorter and easier trails as well. The red rocks of this area are stunning. It is worth driving out here. Georgia O'Keeffe spent time at Ghost Ranch painting, and Ghost Ranch also offers horseback rides and walking tours focused on her history in this area.

This is one the of the local areas for hiking and fabulous views that you must see. It is one hour way by car. The hikes can be strenuous, especially if you are coming from a lower altitude. www.ghostranch.org

Another area that is amazing for it's scenery as well as movie backgrounds, Ghost Ranch is also a museum and hiking destination.
