Grotte di Nerone, among the most famous beaches of the coast south of Rome, the lido delle Grotte di Nerone, in Anzio, concentrates sea, history and archeology in a single place. In addition to a beautiful beach of golden sand and often crystalline sea, in fact, here is one of the most important archaeological sites in Lazio: the remains of the majestic imperial villa of Nerone. The beach takes its name from the presence of the Caves of Nerone, located at the foot of Capo d'Anzio, the small promontory in the city center in front of which the emperor Nerone had a port built. The ancient Antium, for a long time the capital of the Volsci, at the time, also included the territory of the current town of Nettuno. It was the oldest colony in Rome: conquered by the Romans in the fifth century BC, soon became the exclusive holiday destination of the Roman nobility and, from Augustus onwards, of the various imperial dynasties that followed one another over the centuries.
