[1h Drive] Saint Sophia Cathedral, today known as Selimiye Mosque, is located in the north of Nicosia. The building, which was built in the Gothic style, is used as the main mosque of Nicosia. The cathedral, which is a very magnificent structure, stands out among the most important Gothic architectural works of Cyprus. The cathedral, which was started to be built in 1208 by the Latin Archbishop Eustorgio de Montaigu, was opened to visitors in 1326. The coronation ceremonies of the Lusignan kings were also held in the cathedral, which was the most important church in Cyprus at the time it was built. The stone carved windows right above the door reflect the best example of Gothic art, the most famous architectural style of the period. In the building, which has 3 corridors and 6 side sections, there are also small places of worship. You can visit the Selimiye Mosque, which is open for worship today, in the city center of Nicosia every day. There are many cafes and restaurants around. It is an hour's drive from the villa. Entrance to Selimiye Mosque is free.

The most recognisable landmark in North Nicosia, the Selimiye Mosque began life as the Church of Agia Sofia and was finished after a 78-year construction process in 1326. It has been a mosque since the 16th century, when the Ottomans took control of the island. This merging of elaborate medieval church design and the simplicity of mosque design has created a fascinating space with the soaring interior of this typically Gothic structure having been whitewashed and any icon details long taken away. If you'd like to enter, bring a headscarf (for females) and dress modestly (no shorts or shoulderless tops). The mosque is a five-minute walk from the Ledra Street border crossing(Passport required)
