Summers in Steamboat are incredible. An abundance of outdoor activities and fresh mountain air make hiking an incredible thing to do for the whole family. Explore the numerous hiking trails in the area. Most of them are only a few blocks from town. GILPIN LAKE - Wind through aspen groves and past stately pine trees and head on to the sweeping views of the Sawtooth Range. This moderate-level hike is nine miles roundtrip. Reach the trailhead by taking Elk River Road (County Road 129) 18 miles to Seedhouse Road (NFSR 400; also CR 64), where you'll turn right and drive another 11 miles to the Slavonia trailhead parking area. FISH CREEK FALLS - The 283 - foot cascades are a favorite with tourists and locals alike. The falls are only a quarter of a mile from the road, but there are plenty of options for extending your hike, including a six-mile route to Long Lake and a half mile overlook trail. Head east on Lincoln Avenue, turn left on Third Street, and then take a right on Fish Creek Falls Road. You'll find a parking area three miles further; the Forest Service charge is $5.00 per vehicle per day. DEVIL'S CAUSEWAY - Looking for a more challenging hike? The land bridge is only three miles from the trailhead, but getting there will leave you breathless - both from the exertion and the views. Take Routt County Road 7 from downtown Yampa, until it ends nearly 17 miles later and becomes Forest Service Road 900j. drive until you reach the parking lot on the north end of Stillwater Reservoir. This trail is strictly for hikers. HOWELSON HILL/EMERALD MOUNTAIN - Located within walking distance of downtown Steamboat, the Emerald Mountain area of Howelsen Hill boasts over 4,000 acres of public land and 24 miles of trails with exceptional views of the valley.
