Another oasis of peace and quiet in the heart of the CBD. It’s Australia’s oldest library, with a striking portico and ornate vestibule and multiple levels for you to explore. Find a quiet space to sit, close your eyes, and meditate. There is something peaceful about sitting among all those books and information and emptying the mind. I like to head straight for The Friends Room on the ground floor, which was built in 1901 as the original Mitchell Library reading room. It has lead-lined cabinetry, Art Deco rugs designed by the Australian designer Florence Broadhurst, and comfortable leather chairs where you can sit undisturbed.

Forget the new bit and head between the grandiose columns that lead into the Mitchell Wing. The main reading room is gorgeous, bathed in light and with wooden bookshelves mountaineering the walls.

Restaurant
“YUM CHA (Chinese brunch) This is a real experience if you have never tried it. The food comes around on trolleys. You choose what you want from the trolley and it is added to your card. It is an amazing atmosphere. Very child friendly. Our favourites are Sky Phoneix in Westfield in Pitt Street Mall and the New Marigold on George St in Chinatown. Go between 11am-2pm.”
