This is only a short walk from the cottage. Come out of the cottage and turn right and follow the footpath. The ruins of Whitby Abbey are among the most celebrated sights of North Yorkshire. The first monastery here, founded in about 657, became one of the most important religious centres in the Anglo-Saxon world. In 664 it was the setting for the Synod of Whitby, a landmark in the history of the Church in England.

This is lovely walk and upto the old lighthouse the pathway is fine for families with children but beyond that the pathways do become uneven and undulating. One of the favourite routes visitors to the area enjoy is the Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay walk. This cliff top route follows a very popular section of the Cleveland Way. It covers 7 miles and should take around 3 hours to complete

Very interesting and for those looking to get their historic 'fix' for the day, a definate place to visit. Winner of the 2013 Visit England Gold Award for Excellence! Visit the house where the James Cook came to serve his seaman's apprenticeship. The handsome 17th century house on the harbour belonged to Cook's master, the Quaker shipowner, John Walker.

A few steps to the top but worth it for the views. There is a gentle slope to the side if you have push/wheelchairs. The bones were acquired in 1963 by Whitby Rural District Council as a gift from a Norwegian shipping company to mark the town's whaling past. The bones came from a 113-ton fin whale which was killed in the Weddell Sea in the Antarctic by the Norwegian whaling ship Thorshovd
